(1)
(1)(A) Connective Tissue
(2)(C) Muscle
(3)(D) Nervous Tissue
(4)(B) Epithelium

(2)(C) Stratified
(E) Squamous

(5)(B) Connective Tissue

Define the following:

Simple vs. Stratefied: "Simple" signifies a single layer of epithelial cells. "Stratified" signifies
two or more layers of epithelial cells.
Squamous vs. Cuboidal vs. Columnar: Squamous epithelium is composed of cells that are wider
than their height (flat and wide). Cuboidal epithelium is composed of cells whose height and
width are approximately the same (cube shaped). Columnar epithelium is composed of cells
taller than wide.
Apical vs. Basal: The apical faces external environment or lumen of a tube where it is often
involved in absorption or secretion. The basal mediates attachment to underlying tissue or
surface via integrins.

(10) A bone collar forms around the diaphysis of the hyaline cartilage model.
- Cartilage in the center of the diaphysis calcifies and then develops cavities.
- The periosteal bud invades the internal cavities and spongy bone forms.
- The diaphysis elongates and a medullary cavity form.
- The epiphyses ossify.
(11) Short Bone
(12) Volkmann's canals radiate throughout the bone matrix, linking the central canal, periosteum,
and all lamellae. Canaliculi interconnect all lacunae, allowing transfer of nutrients and wastes
between the blood and osteocytes.
(13) During growth, the epiphyseal plate maintains a constant thickness because the rate of
cartilage growth on its epiphysis-facing side is balanced by its replacement with bony tissue on
its diaphysis-facing side.
(14) An osteoid seam (an unmineralized band of gauzy-looking bone matrix) marks areas of new
matrix deposits by osteoblasts. Between the osteoid seam and the older mineralized bone, there is
an abrupt transition called the calcification front. Because the osteoid seam is always of constant
width and the change from unmineralized to mineralized matrix is sudden, it seems that the
osteoid must mature for about a week before it can calcify.

(17) Wheelchair-bound people have thin, weak, legs and thigh bones because bones that are not
subjected to weight bearing stress lose calcium. Atrophy happens to muscles when you can't use
them anymore.
(22) It could have happened to his sister from severe weight training or excessive weight usage
that could have caused from lifting an excessive amount of weight on the muscles and causing
injury. They should not continue the program they need to heal to make the injury heal.
