For immediate release

The Amalgamated Rainbow Movement calls on the responsible authorities to maintain roads
and repair potholes. The escalating road maintenance crisis in South Africa means many people
drive on poor roads which can cause accidents.

Road taxes have been rising while the services remain sluggish. The province of Gauteng in
2021 estimated that it has more then twenty-one thousand potholes. Potholes has been an
issue in most of our communities both on municipal and national roads and this is a concern as
it impose a danger to road users.

We would like to remind government that it is still their responsibility to maintain and fix roads
but also that SANRAL and Public Works are liable if motorist suffer as a result of their failure to
keep up with their responsibilities, this includes paying motorist out if their car do get damaged
or if anyone gets injured due to potholes.

I therefore call on the authorities responsible to exercise their responsibilities to make South
African roads safe.
