In Andrew Delbanco’s article “Three Reasons College Still Matters” Delbanco, a professor of

American Studies at Columbia University, discusses the importance of college. He explains that
many attend a high education institution for economic reasons, political reasons, and for
enjoyment. His article, published in 2016 in The Boston Globe, discusses all these points and
more. First, Delbanco argues college gives every student the ability to think more deeply just
like Walt Whitman said, “I loaf and invite my soul.” He also says that it is easier for a student
with a college degree to make more money than a student with a high school diploma. Most
importantly, we must know the difference between following the laws and changing the laws.
College also helps us to expand our knowledge by thinking about the effect of politics. Delbanco
argues that one must also be educated on democracy, which is “the basis of our government.”
College still matters and people should attend college because it helps with oneself knowledge
and forms a successful country.
