Writing Assignment 1

The Personal Narrative

Growing up, I did not really show great prospects in terms of education. My colleagues in

school made me their object of ridicule by reason that I always performed poorly in class. This

was a very tough experience I had to go through and I would have given up on my educational

journey but for a certain affectionate and caring teacher who recognized my situation and

decided to help. In retrospect, this piece of writing explores the narrative of the help I received

from this teacher as well as my profound gratitude.

In grade two and when I had just planned on quitting school, Mrs. Boyd was employed to

teach my class as the original teacher had taken a sabbatical. I noticed something different about

her as soon as she arrived. Her enthusiasm in teaching and her desire to see students do well

were very admirable. She first recognized me when she conducted her first test in grade two

mathematics and realized that I performed abysmally. She waited for school to close and asked

me to wait behind. Her friendliness and care for children really made it easy to have a

conversation with her. After a long dialogue, she decided to help me which in doing so, she

committed time outside her normal working hours to helping me in this regard.

After a handful series of meetings and tutoring, she was able to resuscitate the academic

desire in me. It turned out the greatest cause of my poor performance wasn’t dullness but rather

loss of desire. As Mrs. Boyd did this, sharpening my intellectual skills became easier. She

continued to render her services to me even after we had moved on to another grade. In no more

than three academic years, I was as good a student as the best five students in the class. Teachers

loved and adored me ever since then. On top of that, I was named the most improved student

during the Award’s Day, which I dedicated to my helper and teacher, Mrs. Boyd. It was quite the

heartfelt and touching scene, might I add.

The lesson of this story is line with Albert Einstein’s assertion and I quote, “Everyone is

a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing

that it is stupid.” It is easier to ignore the potential of others because of the standard of

measurement one may use without giving the individual the chance to show what he or she can

really do. Because early child education is the building block of every person’s academic life,

any ‘crack’ in this foundation might go a long way to affect the subsequent quality of the

victim’s education. In my situation, for instance, I have remained a good student following the

elaborated events.

It is noteworthy that as children are the future of the next generation, it is imperative that the

quality of education is not taken for granted. The onus therefore lies on teachers and tutors to pay

close attention to children students in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses on which

to work for proper development. I am extremely hopeful that my story can inspire individuals

who are on the verge of giving up to rise up and seek assistance. I was and still am very grateful

to have gone through this phase of life.
