Problem 2.6: Compare the ideal COP of R-134a and R-22 at an evaporating temperature of 40ºF with
20ºF and a condensing temperature of 120ºF with 15ºF subcooling with the actual compressor COP’s
calculated from the manufacturer’s performance tables.
COP FOR R-134a = 3.34
For R-22
H2 = 111Btu/lb
h3 = h4= 42Btu/lb H2 = 124Btu/lb

h1: (Tevap = 40°F), Pevap = 83.280 psia, T1 = 60°F, and h1 = 111 Btu/lb.

h2: (tc = 120°F), Pcond = 274.71 psia, T2 = 160°F, and h2 = 124 Btu/lb.

h3: (tc = 120°F), Pcond 274.71 psia, T3 = 105°F, and h3 = 42 Btu/lb.

h4 = h3 = 42 Btu/lb

From Table 2.4 @ te = 40°F and tc = 120°F,

RC = 39.1 MBtu/h and
Pc = 3.22 kW

Thus, EER = 3.22𝑘𝑊 = 12.14 MBtu/kWh = 12.14 /Wh and
