Module: Principles and Applications of Engineering Measurement System (NIC 310)
Title: Performance and operation of measurement systems

Introduction:
Industrial processes require different types of control & measurement systems for effective
monitoring and control of process parameters. The choices of sensors are decided by the nature
of the process, its range, and process characteristics. Hence the elements of measurement
system have to be selected for specific applications. This assignment concentrates on the
identification of signal conditioning requirements, operation and performance of the
measurement systems.

Scenario:
Bahrain Calibration center, the company where you are working asked you to analyze the
performance of the given pressure measurement system. Hence analyze the performance of the
above measurement system and produce the relevant documentation.

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P3.

Task 1
a) Connect the Pressure measurement system as per the given diagram. [05 Marks]

b) Identify or determine the Range, Span, Resolution, Sensitivity, Hysteresis and

Accuracy of the given measurement system. [15 Marks]

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P5.

Task 2

a) Name any three signal converters used in instrumentation systems. [03 Marks]

b) Analyze and describe the conversion process that takes place the given signal
converter. [17 Marks]

Scenario:
Gulf Petroleum Corporation Limited requires a circuit for the boiler control system which
requires the difference in temperature from two locations. The temperature sensors produce the
temperature information available as voltages V1 and V2. Develop an operational amplifier
circuit to measure difference in temperature with following specification.
1. The output voltage range of each sensor is 0-5 V.
2. The output voltage range of circuit to measure difference in temperature is 0-5 V.

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P6

To complete the above mentioned work, you have to do following tasks.

Task 3: [20 Marks]
a). Draw the proposed circuit using operational amplifier to measure difference in voltages.

b). Construct and check the circuit for different conditions.

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P7

Task 4:
a) List out some of the commonly used test equipment to test /Analyze the measurement
system. [5 Marks]

b) Select appropriate test equipments to trouble shoot the operation of the above
mentioned measurement system in task 3. [15 Marks]

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P8

Task 5:
a) A pressure measurement system used to measure the pressure in the range of 0 to 200
bar gives the current output of 4 -20 mA. Record the data and evaluate its performance
specification. [20 Marks]
