In this episode, I will re-introduce the lesson that we covered on Monday, which is to learn how to solve
equations by using algebraic properties to justify each step.

Let’s begin with a brief review.

(I will be asking questions and providing answers. Please feel free to pause the video after each question
if you would like to try answering them yourselves.)

What is the symmetry property of equality?

The symmetry property of equality says if a = b, then b = a.
Using this property, we know that if 5 = x, then x is equal to 5.

What is the additive inverse property?

Remember that the additive inverse of a number is its opposite number.
If a number is added to its additive inverse, then the sum of both the numbers becomes zero. This is
called the additive inverse property.

In simpler terms, think of it as the number you must add to another number to get zero, or a + -a =0
So, if we had 5 as an example, we would add -5 to get 0.

What is the multiplicative inverse property?

When you multiply a number by its reciprocal, you get 1. This is known as the multiplicative inverse
property.
For example, let’s say we are given the problem 5 x 1/5. We can think of this as 5/1 x 1/5, which is 5/5 or
5 divided by 5. Regardless of how we choose to conceptualize this, we know that the result is 1.

Now let’s find a solution for 5x=10.

What would the first step be?
We know that 5x is another way of saying 5 x X or X multiplied by 5.
In order to isolate the variable x by itself, we want to do the inverse of what we are given. If we are
multiplying by 5, the inverse would be to divide by 5 on both sides.
After doing this, we get x=10/5 or x=2

Let’s apply everything we’ve just learned to solve the equation 15=4x-5 and justify each step.
Step 1 is to move -5 to the opposite side of the equation. We do this by adding 5 to both sides. This gives
us 20=4x. How would we justify this step?
The justification for this step is the Additive inverse property.

Step 2 is to isolate the x, and we do this by dividing 4 from both sides. This gives us 5=x.
What is the justification for this step?
The justification is the multiplicative inverse property.

I want to thank everyone for joining me on this episode! If you have any further questions please reach
out to me, I would be happy to go over them with you in class. Have a wonderful day everyone.
