Te Ao Maaori -Maaori Worldview

A fundamental belief that all things are interconnected through whakapapa, which is traced back to creation stories.
Everything is connected on a spiritual and physical dimension, spanning time and space.
Waka, Iwi, Hapuu and Whaanau
Each Iwi (tribe) is made up of various hapuu
Founding ancestors travelled to New (clans or descent groups), which are made up
Zealand on waka’s. of whanau (extended family) and can trace
ancestors back to waka.
Tapu and Noa
Tapu Noa
The strongest force in Maaori life. Sacred. A normal everyday state, common, not sacred.
A spiritual restriction. To function in noa, tapu must be removed.
Manaakitanga
The act of extending love, compassion, empathy, hospitality,
kindness and care in order to uplift, empower, and support
others. It is recipricol, and is displayed in many ways.

Poowhiri: a welcome ceremony which removes the tapu (sacredness) of the Manuhiri (visitors) to make them one with Tangata Whenua (home people/local people)
Tino Rangatiratanga
The right of self-governance
Kaitiakitanga
The act of guardianship and protection of our
environment, in order to leave it better than it was
for future generations.

Toitū he kāinga, whatu ngarongaro he tangata.
