WHY THE NAME ST GEORGES GUILD?
‘GUILD: society for mutual aid or prosecution of common abject”. Exactly!
ST GEORGE: patron saint of England. An appropriate name as the Guild was closely supported
by both the British Embassy and the chaplains of St George's Church.
The Guild was invited to hold its meetings in the church hall by the chaplain and then the
\iorary donated by the British Council was housed in church house.
‘Although a non-religious organtsation, the Guild was seen as a way of bringing together people
of different nationalities, religion and background when this was not common in Spain. To
thank the church for use of the premises, the Guild organised and ran the annual sore,
Bazaar for 30 years, donating all the money to the church,
‘Now there are many more English-speaking groups so things have changed! However, we stilt
emphasise the social-cultural aspect of the Guild with a wide range of talks and other events
and still enjoy the opportunity to meet new friends in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere
at the tiny cost of J per meeting!
