New Hire Training Plan – Day 1 Outline

Congratulations on taking the next step in your career by joining the Five Guys family!
Your first day with the company was briefly outlined in your welcome email, but this document, which
provides you with further details about your onboarding plan, is designed to walk you through the first
day in detail to ensure you enjoy an efficient and effective first day on the job.
At Five Guys, we strive to create a structured learning environment during training, emphasizing
organization and patience.
Please note that since not all stores are the same, certain parts of the admin and orientation sections of
this outline may be altered to meet the needs of your organization.

Pre-Training Administration & Orientation


You will be notified in advance of your orientation’s start time, where you should park, what to wear
and anything else relevant to your first day.
After you have completed your onboarding paperwork, the General Manager will review, finalize and
process all paperwork. You will be expected to review the Employee Handbook during this time.
Orientation
1. You will receive your uniform
a. Non-slip shoe requirement will be explained
2. You will be given time to change into your new uniform
3. You and your GM will review your job description
4. Your GM will explain expectations for energy, attitude, and performance
5. Parking policies will be discussed
6. Scheduling will be explained
a. Availability, how to request time off and where to find schedule will be reviewed
7. Review payroll process and pay periods
8. Secret Shopper Program will be reviewed in depth
a. How it works
b. How to win
c. Review previous shop reports
9. Review sections of Employee Handbook, including:
a. Uniform policy; grooming and appearance expectations
b. Media policy and social media guidelines
c. Standards of conduct
d. Attendance policy
e. Cell phone policy
f. Break and smoking policy
g. Employee meal policy
h. Tip jar policy

i. Harassment policy
j. Arbitration Agreement
10. Clocking in
11. Tour of store, which includes:
a. Introduction to staff
b. Apron policies
c. Proper handwashing and glove policies
d. Store floor plan; cleanliness expectations for each area
e. Storage of personal items and employee food
f. Line communication
g. Safety considerations & general safety
h. Food safety overview
12. Five Guys University
13. End of shift – review performance and discuss expectations for next shift. At this point the shift
can either be ended or the employee can begin the formal training process.

Training
After you complete your orientation, you will start working as a trainee. This will consist of watching
core onboarding courses in Five Guys University (FGU), and then moving to hands-on training in the
kitchen.
Your hands-on training will only reflect those skills you have learned within FGU on Day 1. For example,
if you complete the Dressing skills course on FGU during your first day, you will then train Dressing in
the kitchen.
Remember, don’t feel overwhelmed. Your team is there to help you every step of the way!
