Review: Equations

A. Equation: a statement that two mathematical expressions are equal

Ex: Determine whether 2 is a solution of the equation:

2 − [3 − (3 − x)] = 3x − (4 + x)

Determine whether 8 is a solution of the equation:

1 1 1
 
x x 8 2

B. Linear Equation:
The general form:
ax  b  0

where a and b are real numbers and x is the variable.

Ex: Determine whether the following equations are linear:

a. 4 x  5  3 b. x 2  2 x  8

x
c. x  6  d. x  6x  0
3
C. Quadratic Equation:
The general form:
ax 2  bx  c  0

where a, b, and c are real numbers and x is the variable.

In this class, we will learn how to solve a quadratic equation by Factoring and by using the
Quadratic Formula.

 The Quadratic Formula:

 b  b 2  4ac
x
2a

D. Other Types of Equation:

1. An equation involving Fractional Expressions

2. An equation involving a Radical
3. An Absolute Value Equation
 Review of absolute value:
5 5
5 5
So, in general: |x| = |-x| = x

How about: |x – 4| ?

Ex: Determine whether the following is an equation

1
a. x2  x d. x y
x 1  y 1

x 1 2 1 2
b.  e.  
x  y 1 y 4 x 2 x

c. x2  4  x  2 f. x  3  2x  1
