THE SEXUAL SELF

Sexual Self Defined

● Sexual selfhood – defines as how one thinks about himself or herself as a sexual
individual
● Sexual self-schema – more specific sexual-self model that focuses primarily on
cognitive attributions and evaluations of the sexual self
● Sexual subjectivity – sexual self model that focuses primarily on physical esteem and
entitlement to sexual pleasure

Sexual self concept

- is the most researched term and has the most variations as a construct.
- Broader definition.
- Contains factors that deal with evaluations of cognitive, affective, interpersonal,
behavioural, and psychological aspects of sexuality
- Includes attributions of desire and arousal
- Includes thoughts and feelings of a person about his or her own sexuality

1. Biological Sex – biological features (based on external genitalia, chromosomes,


hormones and the reproductive system which is assigned at birth)
2. Gender
- identity that is learned and changes overtime
- influences by social construct and personal identity
- corresponds to our chromosomal and phenotypic sex (not always the case)

Queer – questioning their identities

Intersex – born with mix of male and female bio traits

Asexual – not interested in or does not desire sexual activity

3. Sexual orientation – enduring pattern of romantic or sexual attraction

⮚ Bisexuality – sexual attraction to either or both
4. Sexual preferences – voluntary choice. A person who identifies himself or herself as his
desire or choice

- Thailand – kathoey (transgender woman)
