About the Author:

William Sydney Porter, better known by his pseudonym, O. Henry, was an American writer known
primarily for his short stories. He also wrote poetry and non-fiction . The Last Leaf is one of the
short stories he wrote under the pen name O. Henry,  published in 1907. After he left his position at
the Land Office, Porter worked at the First National Bank of Austin. An audit turned up evidence of
foul play, and Porter was accused of embezzlement. He fled to Honduras before his trial, but
returned to Austin nearly a year later. In February 1898, he was found guilty of embezzlement and
sent to an Ohio penitentiary where he was incarcerated for three years. While in prison, he focused
on his creative writing and coined the pen name, O. Henry.
The Last Leaf
The story is set in Greenwich Village during a pneumonia epidemic. It tells the story of an old artist
named Behrman who saves the life of Johnsy, a young neighboring artist, who is dying of
pneumonia, by giving her the will to live. Johnsy believes that she is going to die when the last leaf
falls to the ground. She lives with Sue, a friend, who looks after her. Through her window she can
see an old ivy creeper (growing on a nearby wall), gradually shedding its leaves as autumn turns
into winter, and she has taken the thought into her head that she will die when the last leaf falls. The
leaves fall day by day, but the last lone leaf stays on for several days. The ill woman's health quickly
recovers. At the story's end, we learn that Mr. Behrman, who is always drunk, but who always
wanted to produce a masterpiece painting, and who had never had any success, spent considerable
time painting with great realism a leaf on the wall for the whole night. Furthermore, the old artist
himself dies of pneumonia contracted while being out in the wet and cold.
