Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, many schools have been closed
and students have had to study online due to lockdown. In my opinion, it
appears that learning online is not as effective as expected for some drawbacks, especially to students in lower secondary schools. First of all, attending classes online requires pupils to sit in front of screens constantly. For example, the more time they spend looking at screens, the more they are affected by blue light released from them, which hurts their eyes, causes headache, even makes it hard for them to sink into sleep. Lack of movements also leaves negative effects on children at the growing age. In addition, staying at home without socializing for a long time may lead to several mental illnesses such as depression, stress, anxiety, and so on. Another reason making online learning a difficulty is that poor students are not able to have enough equipment. To illustrate, those who live in mountainous areas cannot access to the Internet since there is no Wi-Fi, while many cannot afford to buy a smartphone or a computer. The problem that seems to be the biggest problem is the academic quality. To paraphrase, when studying at home, students are surrounded with several distractions, which might be their siblings playing with them or a bunch of different addictive social media sites. Consequently, they do not pay enough attention to the lesson and receive the knowledge they are supposed to get. The most satisfactory conclusion we can come to is that learning online is ineffective since it harms students’ health, is a struggle for the poor and worsens many pupils' grades.
