SAFETY
3.0 - CLASSIFICATION -
QuadraSCAN is an accessory of the QuadraLASE laser system for surgical and therapeutically applications.
The QuadraSCAN is designed, manufactured and safeguarded specifically for use with the QuadraLASE
laser system.
WARNING !
AS THESE CONDITIONS ARE THE OUTCOME OF THE INITIAL EVALUATION OF THE MACHINE AND
CONSEQUENT RISKS, A DIFFERENT USE COULD CAUSE DAMAGES TO THE EQUIPMENT AND BE A
HAZARD FOR THE OPERATORS, PATIENTS AND THIRD PARTIES. THEREFORE THE NON-
OBSERVANCE OF THE TECHNICAL PARAMETERS AND THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN THIS
HANDBOOK COULD CAUSE ABNORMAL RUNNING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY JEOPARDISE THE
MACHINE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF THE OPERATOR AND PATIENT.
It is the operator’s responsibility to comply with the listed precautions in order to guarantee his own safety
and that of the patient.
QuadraLASE in combination with QuadraSCAN must be used by only medical personnel with
specific skill in procedures requiring the use of the CO2 laser system.
The QuadraLASE laser system and accessories comply with the ISO60601-1-1-2 for Medical Devices (Class
IIb).
3.1 - PRECAUTIONS -
CAUTION:
THE FOLLOWING MEASURES MUST BE OBSERVED TO GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF PERSONS
WITHIN THE PHYSICAL OPERATIONAL LIMITS OF THE SYSTEM.
CAUTION:
THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE KEPT LOCKED. THE KEY SHOULD BE ENTRUSTED TO ONLY
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL.
The equipment must be utilized in a room or in an area where the access door displays the sign: Laser
Controlled Area (Fig. 3.1).
WARNING!
ACCESS TO THE AREA, DURING OPERATION OF THE APPLIANCE, MUST BE RESTRICTED TO
ONLY AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL.
CAUTION:
IN THE EVENT WHERE MORE THAN ONE LASER SYSTEM IS WORKING SIMULTANEOUSLY IN THE
SAME AREA, LASER EMISSIONS SHOULD BE ISOLATED BY MOBILE OPAQUE BARRIERS THAT
BLOCK THE WAVELENGTH OF THE RELEVANT LASER SOURCES.
In view of the fact that light radiation entering the eye is attenuated in part by the response of the pupil, it is a
good policy to always operate lasers in a well-lit environment.
CAUTION:
THE ROOM OR AREA MUST BE WELL LIT TO CONSTRICT THE PUPILS TO A MINIMUM, THEREBY
REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT ENTERING THE EYES.
In according with the EMC regulation CEI EN 60601-1-2, QuadraLASE is intended for use in the
electromagnetic environment as specified in the ANNEX “C” (Table 201, 206) of QuadraLASE Instruction
Manual.
Because of the high energy emitted by the CO2 source, there is always a potential risk of damage to the
body and eyes.
WARNING!
NEVER LOOK STRAIGHT INTO THE APERTURE FROM WHICH THE LASER BEAM IS EMITTED.
OPERATOR AND PATIENT MUST ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHICH PROTECT
AGAINST THE WAVELENGTH OF THE LASER SOURCE USED IN COMPLIANCE WITH DIRECTIVE
89/686/EEC (STANDARD EN207). THE CO2 LASER MUST ONLY BE DIRECTED AT THE
TREATMENT ZONE AFTER THE REQUISITE FUNCTIONS ON THE CONTROL PANEL HAVE BEEN
SELECTED / CONFIRMED, AND THE CORRECT FOCUSING HAS BEEN ACCURATELY DETERMINED.
CAUTION:
LASER PLUME MAY CONTAIN VIABLE TISSUE PARTICULATES. THE USE OF A SMOKE EVACUATION
SYSTEM IS RECOMMENDED.
CO2 laser emission can be reflected by many surfaces other than those normally considered reflective. It is
recommend that all metal objects such as watches, rings, necklaces etc. be removed from the active laser
field. Only surgical instruments designed for use with CO2 lasers should be used in an active laser field.
These instruments should be matt or with a burnished finish.
CAUTION:
THERE ARE MANY METALLIC SURFACES WHICH APPEAR MATT TO THE NAKED EYE, BUT ARE
STILL ABLE TO REFLECT INFRARED RADIATION.
Many non-metallic materials will ignite when exposed to CO2 laser emission. Plastic, paper and wood
objects should be removed (as far as possible) from the active laser field.
WARNING!
NEVER USE THE CO2 LASER SYSTEM NEAR FLAMMABLE ANAESTHETICS AND/OR FLAMMABLE
DISINFECTANTS.
Never use plastic instruments for laser surgery, or if unavoidable, shield them with aluminium foil.
If the patient's head or face is to be treated, protect the patient's eyes with water soaked gauze, or with
protective goggles. Water highly absorbs CO2 laser emission and provides an extremely effective shield.
Whenever it is necessary to shield the body from laser radiation, it is recommended to cover the area with
water soaked gauze.
CAUTION:
FOR ANY AND ALL MATTERS RELATING TO SAFETY, PLEASE FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDATIONS
AND REGULATIONS ISSUED BY SAFETY AUTHORITIES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CORRECT USE OF
LASER SYSTEMS.
