For summer holidays I read yhe Gulliver's travel by Jonathan Swift.
This book talks about the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, bornt in England and a ship doctor's. His first travel was on a ship called the “Antelope”. At first the voyaje was going well but during a storm, the ship hit a rock and fell down. Gulliver started swimming for a lot of hours. When he realised that the water wasn't deep anymore,he walked to the beach, where a croud of avery small man captured him and brought him in their town, named Lilliput. In this city everything was very small: animals, buildings, trees, food. For example, birds are about the same size as flies. The Emperor of the City tried to speak to Gulliver but he spoke a foreign language.Gulliver became immediately an attraction for Lilliputians and many of them where afraid of him. One day Gulliver asked the Emperor for permission to visit the capital city of Lilliput, name Mildendo. He stayed here for two weeks. Unfortunately he discovered that there was a war between Lilliput and the country of Blefuscu. The reason of the war was about the correct way to eat eggs: the citizens must open eggs from the smaller end but many people refused to obey the Emperor. The Emperor's Minister of Lilliput asked Gulliver's help. He pulled the Blefuscu navy towards Lilliput and he became a hero. However after some days Gulliver wanted to go back to England and the Emperor helped the adventurous man giving him a boat, food and drinks. He sailed away from Blefuscu and after some days, he saw a large English ship. He followed it and finally the sailors saw him and soon take him with them. The second voyage was on a ship called “Adventure”. After a great storm, they arrived on a land where they only wanted raise some fresh water. Unfortunately the sailors were going away to the boat because they were frightened of a giant and they left Gulliver alone. Then the giant noted the little man on the ground and picked up Gulliver, that was very afraid. The adventurer tried to speak to the giant but he didn't understand him. So Gulliver used signs to explain to the giant that his fingers were hurting his sides. Luckily he understood and put the man in his pocket and brought him to a farmer. The farmer didn't understand what Gulliver was but he kept him. After the farmer's son and his cat played with Gulliver, helding him by legs. So the farmer became very angry. However Gulliver became a friend of the big children and his sister named Glumdalclitch. She told him that the name of her town was Brobdingnag and she gave him lessons in their language. She called him Grildgrig, which means “little man” in their language. One day the farmer decided to take Gulliver to the town's market and made people pay to see the little strange man. The farmer made a lot of money and decided to travel to others town, until also the Queen wanted to see the little man. Gulliver and Glumdalclitch performed a special show for the Queen, who loved it and she decided to keep him and Glumdalclitch. The Queen made for Gulliver a special box, where there were a bed and a table with chairs. Here Gulliver kept a collection of interesting objects. One of these was a servant's tooth. He also became a King's friend and he had many conversations with him. Gulliver spent two years in Brobdingnag and he had so much fun. But he began to think of home once again. One day the King decided to visit one of his palace near the sea and Gulliver and Glumdalclitchwent with him. Anyway a servant carried to the beach the box with Gulliver inside and after a few time he fell asleep. When he woke up,he was up in the air because a huge eagle was flying with the box in its mouth. Unfortunately the box fell into the sea, but the captain of an English ship saw the box and brought it onto the ship. Gulliver told his strange story to the captain, who didn't believe him till Gulliver showed him the servant's tooth. Gulliver made also a third travel to the East Indies on a ship named “Hope-well”. Here he bought a little boat but it was attacked by pirates, who put him inato a canoe in the sea without food and water. One day he saw something very strange in the sky: it was an island that was flying with people on it. He decided to call out them asking help. The people on the flying island heard him and they pulled up him towards the island. This crowd of people told Gulliver that the name of their island was Laputa. They were very strange people. Their heads were flat and one eye looked up to the sky and the other one looked in the opposite direction. The people of the island were only interested in mathematics and music but no one was practical at all. This people took Gulliver to King's palace and Gulliver was his special guest. He became a friend of the King's cousin, who was the only man on the island who was interested in talking about adventures and England. After a month Gulliver wanted to leave the island. The next voyage was to Glubbdubrib, that means magician. Gulliver went to the Governor's palace and here he noted that the servants where ghosts. The power of the Governor was to make any dead person appear. Infact he asked Gulliver if he would like to meet any famous people form the past. He saw Alexander the Great, Ceacer, Brutus,General Hannibal, Homer and Aristotle. A fter 10 days,Gulliver took a ship for the island of Luggnagg, where he spent some time at the palace. Here he knew about “Struldbruggs”. Struldbruggs are people who don't die: they behave like ordinary people until they are about thirty years. Then they become sad until they are eighty years. When they are eighty, they are like other old men. After the age of eighty, they lose all their friends and they never make new friends. When they are ninety, they have no memories at all. After two hundred years, they cannot even speak to people because the language of the country changes and they cannot learn new words. After this story Gulliver left Luggnagg and he travelled to Japan, where he found a ship for England. The last travel was on a land named Houyhnhnms, where there weren't any buildings or people but only animals. Then a horse came close to Gulliver. It seemed very interested in him. Another horse soon appeared and both of them made the same noise as if they were talking. Gulliver followed the horses until they arrived to a large building. There were no people in it but it was full of horses. When the Master horse saw Gulliver it said something with anger and disgust like the word “Yahoo”. After ten weeks Gulliver was able to understand the horses' language and he learnt that they called themselves “Houyhnhnm”,which means horse. The Master horse also told him that a Yahoo was an horrible and dirty animal and that they tought he was a Yahoo but he was intelligent and clear. Gulliver told to th Master horse that he came from a different country, where horses don't speak but the “Yahoos”(like him) are intelligent. In addition Gulliver told him that humans use horses to pull carriages and that they ride upon their backs during war. The master horse diddn't understand how intelligent creatures can kill each other(s). He said that humans are worse than Yahoos because Yahoos are stupid and wicked,on the contrary humans are intelligent and wicked and for this reson there's no excuse for them. During the journey in Houyhnhnms Gulliver began to hate humans because they are violent and stupid like Yahoos and he didn't want to become a Yahoo. Gulliver wanted to spent in this country the rest of his life, but the master horse told him that the great Assembly decided that he had to leave their land. So he built on his own a boat. He reached an island in the middle of the sea, where some Portuguese sailors captured him and took him to their captain. He said that Gulliver could sail to England with them. Gulliver came back home but after five years he was still unhappy. He had many adventures and he learnt that people are Yahoos. He missed his friends, the Houyhnhnms.
