COMMON TERMS RELATED TO DOSES

Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to define the commonly used
terms related to doses.

Materials:

- Textbooks
- Medical dictionary

Activity:

I. Define the following terms:

TERMS DEFINITION
Adolescence Adolescence is the period of life from 10 to 19 years old,
between childhood and adulthood. During adolescence, a
child's body, hormones, and development change in ways
that prepare them for becoming an adult. It is a particular
time in a person's life and crucial for laying the groundwork
for good health.
Adult dose The term "adult dose" refers to the dosage that is typically
recommended for use by adults. The assumed daily
maintenance dose is of an average level for a drug that
adults take as its primary indication.
Daily dose It is defined as the average dose based on a
representative sample of prescriptions. It can be
determined by analyzing prescriptions, and medical or
pharmacy records, and it is essential to correlate the daily
dose with the condition for which the drug is prescribed.
Divided dose A specific portion of a total dose is administered multiple
times at short intervals so that the total dose can be
consumed in a predetermined amount of time, typically just
one day.
Dosage range It is defined as the drug’s quantitative amount or range that
can be safely prescribed within the framework of usual
medical practice. It also means that underdosing or
overdosing may occur if the doses are outside of the usual
range.
Dosage regimen It is the frequency at which the doses of drugs are
administered in order to maintain a stable serum
concentration. This also refers to dosing intervals or the
schedule of therapeutic agents' doses per unit of time.
Dose
It is the predetermined drug’s amount administered at one
time to the patient in order to achieve a certain level of
biological response.

Early childhood The age range for early childhood or preschool years is
between 2 and 6. At this age, children's physical and
cognitive development occur rapidly.
Geriatric dose A geriatric dose is an adjustment to the strength and
frequency of drug administration that is made to patients
over the age of 65 in order to reduce the risk of adverse
drug reactions.
Infant An infant is a child that is between 1 month and 1 year of
age.
Late childhood Late childhood includes children between the ages of 6
and 12.
Median effective dose The median effective dose is the amount of a drug that will
have the intended strength of effect in 50% of the
individuals who consume it.
Median toxic dose Median toxic dose is defined as the dose where toxicity
occurs in half of the drugs consumed
Minimum effective Minimum effective concentration is the least amount of
concentration concentration needed to produce the desired
pharmacologic response of the drug.
Minimum toxic concentration Minimum toxic concentration is the least amount of
concentration where toxicity normally takes place.
Neonate Neonate is a newborn infant, aged under 28 days.
Pediatric dose Dose that is administered to children.
Premature Premature babies are born at less than 37 weeks’
gestation.
Priming or loading dose This is the amount required to attain the desired
concentration of the drug in the blood or tissues.
Prophylactic dose This is the amount administered to a patient before
exposure or contraction of the illness.
Single dose It is the dose of the drug which is intended to be taken at
one time.
Therapeutic dose It is the dose of the drug required to produce the desired
beneficial effect or outcomes.
Total dose It is the total amount of the drug that was given to the
patient.
