Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University, established by an Act of
Parliament with all India jurisdiction in 1998. The headquarters and main campus of MANUU is in
Gachibowli, Hyderabad. It is spread over 200 acres. MANUU is recognized as a major higher
education service provider across the remote areas of the country for marginalized and first generation
learners of Urdu medium through its regular and distance mode programmes. MANUU commenced
with distance education programmes in 1998 and consolidated its academic and research base in
Urdu medium regular programmes in 2004.
The University is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a scholar par excellence, a prolific writer, an
inimitable orator, a gallant freedom fighter, a visionary of the post independent Indian education
system and an architect of technical and scientific education in Independent India.
Presently, MANUU is in the process of consolidating the existing institutions, while expanding it to
reach the unreached through various intervention measures. Further, to meet the rising aspirations of
its youth in general and Urdu speaking community in specific, the University is making considerable
progress in all fronts of academics, research and governance with specific vision, mission and
objectives.

The University is in the process of fulfilling the Performance Radars stipulated by the UGC for
norm based funding which reflects the quantifiable indicators on the all-round development and
growth of the university in terms of Academic, Research and Governance functions.

The Departments are currently offering 78 programmes and courses, (21 PhD; 21 PG; 08 UG, 05 PG
Diploma and 05 Diploma programmes and 2 Certificate courses. The University also offers technical
Diploma programmes through Polytechnics (08 Diplomas) and vocational programmes through
Industrial Training Institutes (08 Certificate Trades). Further University is evolving to deliver Innovative
and Relevant Quality Education with flexible academic framework through Choice Based Credit
System and upgrade the curriculum based-on market needs periodically.

Governance
Effective Governance System is in place for transparency and accountability with established
structures. Further the University is switching over to e-Governance functioning for streamlining of
internal processes.
The University is also part of Mission Mode Directives of MHRD such as Swacch Bharat Abhiyan;
Swacch Bharat - Swasth Bharat; Swatchhata Pakhwada; Unnat Bharat Abhiyan; Ek Bharat -Shreshtha
Bharat; Beti Bachao - Beti Padao; Vittiya Shaksharat Abhiyan and PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana; in
addition to Digital India project NKN - NME-ICT, which includes Campus Connect, UGC-INFLIBNET,
NDL Cluster, SWAYAM, SWAYAM PRABHA, NAD, Bharatvani etc.,
New Initiatives
Introduced Bridge Courses for enabling Madrasa students, enter into mainstream of education.
Implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and incorporated the MOOCs as Non-
CGPA Credit Course to enhance the value addition to the academic programmes offered by
the MANUU.
Formalized eight MoU’s of strategic partnership with National & International Agencies towards
expanding academic, research and training activities through collaborations.
Encouraging the faculty through funding for minor research and innovation projects.
Instituted ‘Quli Qutb Shah’ Memorial Lecture to commemorate his contributions in Urdu.
Uniqueness
Academically MANUU ranks one among the best universities in the country offering educational
programmes in general, professional, technical and vocational streams. It has received ‘A Grade’
accreditation by NAAC in 2016. The academic pull of MANUU lies in its unique service of providing
education from elementary to doctoral levels in the Urdu language. It has carved a niche as one of the
preferred destinations of higher education in the country. It attracts the academically marginalized
section of the society and brings them to the mainstream of higher education. National Institutional
Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2017 placed the University in between 100 and 150 on overall
performance among 800 Degree awarding Indian Higher Education Institutions. Further, the DST
published report places the MANUU at 24th in publications and 30th in citations among public funded
universities.
There are about 20 satellite and off-campuses of MANUU in 11 States all across India. About 6,000
students are pursuing various programmes in regular mode. The Directorate of Distance Education
offers various academic programmes in distance mode thorough a network of 9 Regional and 5 Sub-
Regional Centres and 158 Learner Support Centres catering to more than one lakh students at their

door step.
The University has campuses across the country viz., Four Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) at
Hyderabad (Telangana), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Darbhanga (Bihar) and Cuttack (Odisha); Five
Polytechnics at Hyderabad (Telangana), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Darbhanga (Bihar), Kadapa (Andhra
Pradesh) and Cuttack (Odisha). These institutions will fulfill the objectives of the University of imparting
vocational and technical subjects in Urdu medium. The University has Eight Colleges of Teacher
Education at Srinagar (Jammu &Kashmir), Darbhanga (Bihar), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Nuh
(Haryana), Asansol (West Bengal), Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), and Bidar
(Karnataka) to train prospective teachers. The University also has satellite campus at Lucknow (Uttar
Pradesh) offering UG, PG and Research programmes. To address mission of empowering Women,
the University established an exclusive - College of Arts and Science for Women at Budgam (J & K)
offering post-graduate and research programmes. True to its mission of spreading the wings of Urdu
and instilling a passion for Urdu among the new generation learners, the University has also
established three Model Schools at Hyderabad, Darbhanga and Nuh to provide quality school
education in Urdu medium.
The University has several academic support centres such as Human Resource Development Centre
(HRDC), Instructional Media Centre (IMC), Centre for Information Technology (CIT), Directorate of
Translation and Publications (DTP), Directorate of Admissions and Internal Quality Assurance Cell
(IQAC) which provide value addition to the University.
The endeavour of MANUU in providing instruction, carrying out research and making contribution
through the medium of Urdu has made it a trailblazer and trendsetting university in beaconing vast
opportunities to all Indian languages institutions for tapping their potential to offer education in science
& technology.
MANUU clearly envisaged the need to enhance, enlarge and expand its activities that are relevant to
the emerging economic environment of the country and also to fulfil the shortfall of workforce needs
due to intensifying activities as per plan mandate of the UGC and also in tune with the directions of
MHRD with reference to quality education, research promotion, internal resource generation,
infrastructure development, student centric measures, e-governance initiatives, outreach activities etc.
Further, it adheres to National Agenda of Access, Equity and Quality and also to ensure that all the
graduating students need to acquire an adequate knowledge of the English and Information
Technology. This enables the Urdu medium students to compete with the rest of the students in the
country for both the vertical and horizontal mobility.

To generate feeder group for the PG and research programmes of MANUU on-campus mode.
To enhance the gross enrolment ratio (GER) based on market needs, gaps and trends in addition to
the societal demands.
The Directorate of Distance Education, MANUU operates through nine Regional and five Sub Regional
Centres located in 11-states of India. Each Regional/Sub Regional Centre (RC/SRC) provides
academic and administrative support to distance learners through Learner Support Centres (LSCs) and
Programme Centres.
The Regional and Sub Regional Centres of Directorate of Distance Education facilitate the ODL
students with support services, management of Study Centres and admission process. In the year
2018-19, Directorate of Distance Education had 112 LSCs within the purview of its RCs/SRCs. In its
endeavour to modernise itself and enhance quality for the benefit of the ODL learners, DDE has
introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) framework for UG & new M.A. programmes. DDE has

vigorously started adopting ICT in its academic and administrative functioning. Admissions to all DDE
programmes are now being conducted through on-line mode only. The University’s Instructional Media
Centre prepares video lectures to provide anytime, anywhere learning environment to the learners
through its dedicated IMC YouTube channel accessible at http://youtube.com/u/imcmanuu. A large
repository of audio-visual educational programmes has already been prepared by the Media Centre
and new lessons are regularly produced and uploaded. Soft copies of SLM are also being provided to
the learners through University’s website. To improve communication between DDE and learners SMS
facility is now extensively used to send alerts to students about various aspects of programme delivery
such as Course Registration, Assignments etc.
The post graduation, graduation, diploma and certificates awarded by the University are at par with the
certificates of recognized Universities. Day-by-day the strength of the students is growing. Thus, the
DDE is striving hard to reach the unreached.

6.3 Programme Structure & Evaluation Pattern for the Diploma Programmes
In the present age of electronics, Journalism is gaining importance. News through Internet is also pervading
among the viewers of television. Hence, news through Internet is rapidly gaining importance thereby giving a
new direction to the field of Journalism. In the present scenario, a large chunk of trained journalists are
required in different fields of media. This is creating new opportunities in the field of Journalism and
Communication. This course will help the aspirants in preparing themselves for career in journalism.

Teach English, a one-year Diploma programme, is designed to help students and teachers of English
to improve their proficiency (both spoken and written) in English and enable them to become quality
teachers of English. The programme will be particularly useful to teachers of English in Urdu medium

Scheme of Examination:
6.4 Programme Structure & Evaluation Pattern for the Certificate Programmes
The main objective of this programme is to acquaint people with Urdu language. The programme has
been so devised that persons who have basic knowledge of reading and writing English language will be
able to learn Urdu. This programme will also be helpful to those who are closely associated with academic
institutions like libraries, archives, academies and museums. It will open up avenues for low skilled
technicians in film industry, T.V. and Radio.

Paper - II : Units 19 to 28 (Basic Vocabulary, Grammar and Specimens of Prose & Poetry)
Duration of Programme:
The duration of the programme is six months. But the students, according to their convenience, can
complete the programme within a maximum period of two years.
Admission Criteria:
The Candidate should be acquainted with English and should complete 18 years of age at the time of
admission.
Counselling and Support Services:
Study material will be dispatched to the students by post on confirmation of admission. No counselling

The basic purpose of this programme is to train Urdu speakers to enhance their speaking and writing

1. As per the UGC and Distance Education Bureau (DEB) policy, a candidate enrolled in a
degree programme under regular mode may pursue a maximum of one diploma/advance
diploma/PG diploma/Certificate programme from distance mode simultaneously. Two
programmes under distance mode are not allowed simultaneously. However, a candidate can
pursue two programmes simultaneously through distance in the following combinations:
One degree and one diploma/PG diploma/Certificate.

Note: The University will not be responsible if there is a clash in the date and timings of
counselling or examinations when a candidate pursues two programmes simultaneously.
3. While filling up the Online Application Form ensure that the Mobile Number and Email
address provided by you belong to you and are active. Communication between Learner
and MANUU shall be predominantly through these modes and non-access to email and mobile
phone will lead to inconvenience at later stage.
4. Also note that for the benefit of its learners, MANUU is in process of adding more Learner
Support Centre to the list of LSCs provided on the University portal. While filling the Online
Application Form the candidate may choose a LSC of her/his preference from the list provided.
5. The selection of LSC at this stage shall be provisional. Subject to feasibility of running LSC,
MANUU at its discretion, may change the LSC to an alternate place at a later stage.
6. If a candidate wishes to change the opted LSC after completing the admission process then
she/he may write to the Learner Supprort Services (ssu.dde@manuu.edu.in) within a period of
30 days from the date of final admission.
7. The University arranges the counselling classes for any course/paper when there is a
minimum of 15 students enrolled at the Learner Support Centre for that academic year. If the
number is below 15 for a course/paper in any Learner Support Centre, then counselling will not
be arranged for that course/paper. If there are 15 or more students enrolled in a particular

course/paper at a study centre but the attendance is below 10 for three consecutive
counselling sessions, the University shall not allow counselling.
8. For counselling classes or any other academic purpose, student should remain in contact with
the Coordinator at the Learner Support Centre.
10. All fee relating to re-admission, re-registration, backlog clearance, etc. shall be remitted
through online transaction only. No other mode shall be acceptable. For paying various types

DEB and University’s Academic bodies and are as such recognised.

A. No, you cannot take admission without passing/qualifying in 10+2 level / or qualified in

Q.5 Are the Madrasa/ Hindi/ Sanskrit certificate/ diploma holders eligible to take
admission in ODL programmes?
A. Yes, if the candidates with such qualifications are eligible as per the Government rules
they will be treated at par and admission will be given, subject to eligibility as per current
year prospectus.

MANUU?

Q.33 Can I take admission in ODL MANUU after successfully completing the first year of
regular course at MANUU itself?
Q.34 Can I take admission in regular mode of MANUU after successfully competing ODL
MANUU first year/ second year?
A. Yes, subject to the approval from the University.
Q.35 Can I pursue the B.Ed. Programme after completing a Degree programme under
ODL, MANUU?

A. DDE students who have successfully qualified their courses are awarded Degree/
Certificate in absentia.
