Gas Management
Surface consumption rate (SCR)
Volume of consumed gas (L) / dive time x average dive depth (ATA)
Minimum gas (MG)
The volume of gas required for two divers to ascend from the bottom to
the surface while sharing gas.
Usable gas (UG)
Cylinder fill pressure (bar) - minimum gas (bar)
Turn pressure (TP)
Gas pressure shown on SPG at which a diver will turn the dive.
This value varies according to the dive plan and gas strategy.
Available gas supply
Cylinder volume (L) x cylinder fill pressure (bar)
Available bottom time (BT)
Usable gas (L) / (SCR x average depth (ATA))
Minimum gas (MG)
MG = (C x A x T) / cylinder volume
C = Consumption - estimated gas consumption for two divers while
sharing gas
A = Average pressure - average pressure between the max depth
and surface/next available gas source
T = Time - time needed to ascend with an average speed of no less
than 3 m/min

Estimated minimum gas

Depth CxAxT MG volume MG in 12 L tank
10 m MG = 40 x 1.5 x 5 300 L 40 bar
20 m MG = 40 x 2 x 8 640 L 60 bar
30 m MG = 40 x 2.5 x 11 1100 L 100 bar

Usable gas (UG) strategies

All usable = fill pressure - MG; TP = MG
Halves of usable gas = (fill pressure - MG)/2; TP = Halves + MG
Thirds of usable gas = (fill pressure - MG)/3; TP = Thirds + MG

Maximum operational depth (MOD) pO2

pO2 = partial pressure of oxygen
fO2 = fraction of oxygen in the gas mix fO2 ATA
ATA = depth (1 ATA for every 10 m + 1 ATA)

For recreational diving the maximum allowed pO2 is 1.4 ATA

TABLE NOTES:
The GUE Minimum Decompression Table is designed for planning recreational minimum decompression limit (MDL)
dives using nitrox 32 as a standard gas. Do not attempt to use it for planning decompression dives.
All dives require a minimum decompression profile with variable ascent rates: maximum ascent rate is 9 m/min or 30
ft/min up to 50% of the dive depth. From 50% of the dive depth, divers should slow down to 3 m/min or 10 ft/min and
follow a minimum decompression profile. This starts from 50% of the dive depth and should include at least 1 min at 9
m/30ft, 1 min at 6 m/20 ft, and 1 min at 3 m/10 ft. The stops can be performed as a 30 second stop at the stop depth
followed by a 30 second ascent to the next stop depth.
Example 1: A dive to 18 m/60 ft stipulates 1 min minimum decompression stops at 9 m/30 ft, 6 m/20 ft, and 3 m/10 ft.
Example 2: A dive to 30 m/100 ft stipulates a change of ascent speed at 15 m/50 ft and 1 min stops at 12 m/40 ft, 9
m/30 ft, 6 m/20 ft, and 3 m/10 ft. The stops can be performed as a 30 second stop at the stop depth followed by a 30
second ascent to the next stop depth.
Emergency decompression: f a minimum decompression limit (MDL) was exceeded by less than 5 min, a 5 min
decompression stop at 3 m/10 ft is mandatory. If a minimum decompression limit was exceeded by more than 5 min, a

Emergency decompression: if a minimum decompression limit (MDL) was exceeded by
less than 5 min, a 5 min decompression stop at 3 m/10 ft is mandatory. If a minimum
decompression limit was exceeded by more than 5 min, a 15 min or longer stop (gas supply
permitting) is mandatory at 3 m/10 ft. Repetitive dives are not allowed after emergency
decompression.
Special recommendations for multiple dives: Recommended limit of no more than 4
dives per day.
Flying after diving: after a single dive, a minimum surface interval of 12 hours is
recommended. After repetitive diving, a minimum surface interval of 18 hours is
recommended.
Diving at altitude: diving at altitude (300 m/1000 ft or greater) requires the use of special
procedures.
