Topic 1 Calculations of Static & Dynamics rock parameters from HYDROSTATIC Rock Experiment

Source: Zimmer PhD dissertation, 2003 Stanford University

Zimmer conducted rock experiments in which he measured both lengths and diameters of the samples
and acoustic velocities vs. confining pressure (HYDROSTATIC test).

OPTION 2:

Use the data presented in his Table A.8. Velocities and porosity of water saturated Pomponio
unconsolidated sand sample (pages 178-180 of the dissertation, and already converted to attached Excel
file).

Work, answer the following Questions into a project report format + presentation slides

1. What is the assumed matrix density of the sample

2 Draw the acoustic velocities Vp & Vs vs. confining pressure

3 Draw the porosity vs. confining pressure

4 Draw the acoustic velocities Vp & Vs vs. Porosity

5 Draw (Vp/Vs) vs. confining pressure

6 Calculate and draw vertical strain, lateral strain, volumetric strain vs. pressure (on 1 graph)

7 How many pressure cycles did Zimmer perform with this sample? Mark them on the plots

8 What (process) happened at the last cycle when pressure was held at 20 MPa

9 Calculate, plot and comment static and dynamic bulk & shear moduli vs. pressure

10 Calculate, plot and comment on dynamic Poisson's ratios vs. pressure.

Hint: dynamic Poisson's ratio = [(Vp/Vs)^2 - 2] / [2(Vp/Vs)^2 - 2]

11 (Bonus, 5 points) Calculate, plot and comment Biot-Willis's coefficient  vs. Pressure

Hint:  = 1- Kdry/Kmatrix ; Can you guesstimate the matrix bulk modulus value (mineral
composition of the Pomponio beach sand can be found in Table 6.2)

12 (Bonus, 5 points) can we consider this Pomponio unconsolidated sand sample a HILE material?
Explain.
