Ship

stability
Paper three
1-With the aid of suitable sketches, show the
effect of slack tanks on a ships stability

2-A ship leaves port upright with a full cargo of

timber, and with a timber on deck.
During the voyage, bunkers, stores and fresh
water consumed evenly from each side.
If the ship arrives at her destination with a list,
explain the probable cause of the list and
How this should be remedied.

3-a) construct a TPC curve from the following

data:
Mean draft (m) 1 2 3 4
5
TPC (tonnes) 3.1 4.32 5.05 5.50
5.73
b) From this curve find the TPC at draft of 1.5
mtr and 2.1 mtr
c) If, while floating at a draft of 3.8 mtr, the ship
discharges 380 mt of cargo and load 375mt
of bunkers, 5 mt of stores ,and 125mt of fresh
water, find the new draft.

4-a) construct a typical curve of statical stability.

b) list the information you can find from this
curve.

5-An oil tanker 150 mtr long, displacement 12500

mt, MCTC 200 tm, leaves port with draft
fwd :7.2mtr , aft :7.4 mtr. There is 550mt of
fuel oil in the fwd deep tank (center of gravity
70 mtr fwd of center of floatation) and 600 mt
in the after deep tank (center of gravity 60 mtr
aft of center of floatation). The center of
floatation is 1 mtr aft of amid ship. During the sea
passage
450 mt of oil is consumed from aft.
Find how much oil must be transferred from the
fwd tank to the after tank if the ship is to arrive
On an even keel.
