Title : Glass and brittle plastic policy

Document Code : B6-AP-31
Version no. : 2
Version date : 17-09-2019

1 Purpose
The objective is to prevent contamination of Avebe products with glass or brittle plastic. All locally
used (site) procedures are in accordance with this policy.

2 Scope
All Avebe’s food and feed products (raw materials, packaging materials and end products) in Avebe’s
manufacturing and storage locations.

3 Policy
3.1 Glass and brittle plastics materials or equipment is minimized in the production and storage areas.
3.2 When glass and brittle plastic parts cannot be avoided, they are protected in such a way that
contamination of the products in the manufacturing or storage areas, is minimized in the case of
breakage (e.g. shatterproof light bulbs, window protection film).
3.3 In case of breakage, the breakage procedure (see 4) will be followed. If the (professional) use of
(smart) phones and/or tablets is allowed in an area, this procedure will be followed in case of
breakage of a device.
3.4 For each department a list with the glass and brittle plastic objects present, is available. The
frequency of the inspections are risk based determined and inspections are recorded.

4 Procedure glass and brittle plastic breakage

4.1 Each event of glass and brittle plastic breakage and its cause should be reported immediately to
the person responsible for the area and recorded on a glass and brittle plastic breakage form.

4.2 Hold production and delivery of products (raw materials, packaging materials and end products) in
case of breakage.

4.3 The contaminated area is to be separated physically in order to prevent any further spreading of
glass or brittle plastic.
4.4 All products that may have been contaminated with glass or brittle plastic are blocked by the
responsible person for that area and reported to the QA department.

4.5 While cleaning, further spreading of glass and brittle plastic is prevented by: – Fencing off (e.g.
with barrier tape) the machines and products in the close proximity before cleaning is started. – the
use of suction air and not using pressured air or water. – the use of properly closed packaging for
disposal of the glass or brittle plastic. -Inspection of the cleaning material afterwards.

4.6 The shoe soles and clothing of all persons who were in the contaminated area between the
moment of glass or brittle plastic breakage and the cleaning operation are inspected and cleaned.
4.7 The fencing off (e.g. with barrier tape) the contaminated area will not be removed until it has been
ascertained that there is no more glass and brittle plastic and the area is released (recorded) by the
responsible person for that area.
4.8 In the event that a production/packaging installation is stopped and cleaned, the installation may
not be started again until it has been released (recorded) by the responsible person for that area.
