CHAPTER I

“Effect of Online Schooling in Grade 11 Section

Idris of Philippines Christian University S.Y
2020-2021 During Covid-19 Pandemic”
INTRODUCTION

As Covid-19- pandemic hits our country, Online Schooling has

been the most efficient way on learning in the midst of the pandemic. In

surprise moved, the (DepEd) postponed the opening classes of 2020-2021

from August 24 to September 18, 2020. Due to the rising cases of Covid-

19, the usual opening of classes was first moved on August 24, But the

almost two-month extension appeared to be inadequate for DepEd to

transition to the overhauled education system prompting a second

postponement to September. DepEd decided to shift to distance learning for

the coming school year for the coming school year to comply with

President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive for schools to delay face to face

classes until a coronavirus vaccine becomes available.

According to Shruti Bhargava (2020), the widespread COVID 19

pandemics has threatened medical education of undergraduate students

unprecedently. During the lockdown, with the principles of social

distancing, all the classroom teaching for these students had to be

suspended, all over the world. Thus, at one point of time, all undergraduate

teaching learning had come to a standstill. This study was conducted to

gather the perception of teaching faculty about the live online classes

during the COVID 19 pandemic.

1.1 Background of the Study

The deadly and infectious disease Corona Virus also known as

Covid-19 has deeply affected the global economy. This tragedy has also

shaken up the education sector, and this fear is likely to resonate across

the education sector globally. The Covid-19 pandemic outbreak forced

many schools and colleges to remain closed temporarily. Several areas

are affected worldwide and there is a fear of losing this whole ongoing

semester or even more in the coming future. Various schools, colleges,

and universities have discontinued in-person teaching. As per the

assessment of the researchers, it is uncertain to get back to normal

teaching anytime soon.

As social distancing is preeminent at this stage, this will have

negative effects on learning opportunities. Educational units are

struggling to find options to deal with this challenging situation. These

circumstances make us realize that scenario planning is an urgent need

for academic institutions (Rieley, 2020). This is a situation that

demands humanity and unity. There is an urgent need to protect and

save our students, faculty, academic staff, communities, societies, and

the nation as a whole. Several arguments are associated with e-learning.

Accessibility, affordability, flexibility, learning pedagogy, life-long

learning, and policy are some of the arguments related to online

pedagogy. It is said that online mode of learning is easily accessible and

can even reach to rural and remote areas. It is considered to be a

relatively cheaper mode of education in terms of the lower cost of

transportation, accommodation, and the overall cost of institution-based

learning.

Flexibility is another interesting aspect of online learning; a

learner can schedule or plan their time for completion of courses

available online. Combining face-to-face lectures with technology gives

rise to blended learning and flipped classrooms; this type of learning

environment can increase the learning potential of the students.

Students can learn anytime and anywhere, thereby developing new

skills in the process leading to life-long learning. The government also

recognizes the increasing importance of online learning in this dynamic

world.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this topic is to discuss about the effects of online

schooling in grade 11 section Idris

1. How Online Schooling can affect Student’s Health?

2. How Students adjust in Online Schooling?

3. What are the challenges for students in Online Class?

1.3 Hypothesis

Students who experience anxiety is most likely to not participate in

online class

If you want to reconsider the other’s effort and ideas then we should not

copy their works

Students who sleep early can attend and focus on online class than the

students who do not sleep early.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The significance of this study is to know what are the effects of online

schooling in different aspects of student's life

Student - This study will help them know what is happening/to

orient themselves in this confusing times of pandemic. It will help them

to cope up and adjust in online schooling in the new normal.

1.5 Scope and Limitations

Respondents are definitely adjusting and experiencing online

schooling. Students are only eligible for 11-Idris of the Philippine

Christian University. This study aims to find out the behavioral

experiences of Grade 11-Idris students on their online schooling in the

new normal. Researchers want to make up how the students overcome

those behavioral experiences in relation to the chosen topics. All

important data gathered will be included as an additional page along

with the reference or definition of terms

1.6 Definition of Terminologies

Inadequate-lacking the quality or quantity required; insufficient for a

purpose. Unprecedently-in a way that has never happened, been done or

been known before.

Pedagogy-the method and practice of teaching, especially as an

academic subject or theoretical concept.

Preeminent-surpassing all others; very distinguished in some way.

2.1 Related Literature

The World Wide Web has made information access and distribution of

educational content available to a large fraction of the world’s population

and helped to move Distance Education (DE) to the digital era. A seminal

article by Keegan (1980) presents key aspects of DE. Some of the elements

are: physical separation of teacher and learner, learning occurs in the

context of an educational institution, technical media are used, teacher and

learner communicate, face to face meetings are possible, and an industrial

model of providing education is used. More recently varying definitions of

DE seem to be based on the perspective of various educators and to reflect

the educational culture of each country and IHE. However, some common

descriptors seem to be accepted by most stakeholders in the field. Distance

education is an educational experience where instructors and learners are

separated in time and space (Keegan, 2002) which means it can happen

away from an academic institution and can lead to a degree or credential

(Gunawardena, McIsaac, & Jonassen, 2008). In order to develop such

programs, it is useful to determine if students are receptive to taking such

online courses and are prepared to do so. This study addresses students’

perceptions and their interest in DE. In addition, it provides a comparative

analysis across three countries whose IHEs do not have extensive offerings

in DE. The results of this research provide some strategies to encourage

and support students to take DE courses.

According to Mayleen Dorcas B. Castro (2019) The Internet has made

online learning possible, and many educators and researchers are interested

in online learning courses to enhance and improve the student learning

outcomes while battling the shortage in resources. It is imperative that the

researchers consider, and examine the efficacy of online learning in

educating students. The researchers reviewed literature through meta-

analysis as the method of research concerning the use of ADDIE (Analysis,

Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) framework for

designing and developing instructional materials that can provide wider

access to quality higher education. The researchers collected papers

relating to online learning courses efficacy studies to provide a synthesis of

scientifically rigorous knowledge in online learning courses, the

researchers searched on ERIC (Education Resources Information Center),

ProQuest databases, PubMed, Crossref, Scribd EBSCO, and Scopus. The

researchers also conducted a manual search using Google Scholar. Based

on the analysis, three main themes developed: 1.) comparison of online

learning and traditional face-to-face setting, 2.) identification of important

factors of online learning delivery, and 3.) factors of institutional adoption

of online learning. Based on the results obtained 50 articles. The

researchers examine each paper and found 30 articles that met the efficacy

of online learning courses through having well-planned, well-designed

courses and programs for higher education institution. Identification of

different processes and activities in designing and developing an Online

aspect of the ADDIE framework.
