Teaching may not be a lucrative position. It
cannot guarantee financial security. It even
means investing your personal time, energy, and
resources. Sometimes it means disappointments,
heartaches, and pains. But touching the heart of
people and opening the minds of children can
give you joy and contentment which money could
not buy. These are the moment I teach for. These

On components
Teaching involves a triad of elements –
teacher, student and subject matter,
and the triad is dynamic inequality. In
teaching, each element influences and
is influences by the relationship
between the other two elements.

that occur between the teachers
and the content being taught to
students of varied characteristics.

Nature of Teaching
Teaching is one of the most
demanding of all profession. It acts a
tremendous demand on the teachers’
teaching skill and personal qualities
before they can satisfactorily perform
the multiple roles and manifold
responsibilities it entails.

Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC

Nature of Teaching
The teachers, to be able to enjoy their
tasks with associates automatically
feel as a friend, an enthusiastic
colleague and a caring partner. A more
serious role, teaching necessarily
makes them decision-makers,
instructional materials developers and
instant researchers.

Nature of Teaching
A more important role
that teaching evokes is the unwavering
commitment and loyalty to the
profession. Their adherence to the
ethical and moral standards are
elicited through a code.

Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC

Nature of Teaching
Teaching is indeed a noble
calling and mission-keeping for others,
despite its daunting list of diversified
roles. Rewards come in the form of
winning the students’ love and
emulation and the parents’
acknowledgement and
gratification.

The Triad of Teaching
Teaching recognizes
the important role inherent among
three elements – teacher, student and
subject matter and the significant
interaction that occurs between and
among them.

Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC

The Triad of Teaching
In every teaching-learning activity, the
teacher influences the learning styles
of the students. The students respond
either positively or negatively
depending on the teacher’s attributes
and skill in presenting a learning task.
The nature of the subject matter
needs to be considered in determining
the strategy to be used.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Triad of Teaching
The interrelationship stresses the
dynamic nature of the triad. They are
interdependent and neither one is
effective alone in achieving a
particular goal. When one of the
elements is missing, the other two
becomes disconnected and teaching
cannot take place.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Teacher
The teacher is the critical “thread that
ties” the learner to the lifelong search
for knowledge. She lays the groundwork
by initially establishing a conducive
learning environment, selects the
appropriate subject matter, and
matches it with a well-designed
plan in order to achieve a
desired goal.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Teacher
She possesses the essential
teaching skills and is infused with a deep
commitment to invest timeless effort in
fostering a continued sharpening and
maturing of children’s minds. How she will
perform depends to a large extent on who
she is, what she can do to the best
of her ability and how she can
tactfully smother children with
genuine love and care. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Student
The student is the second
influential factor in the learning arena.
Teaching happens because the
students are there. Their needs,
interest and abilities deserve prime
consideration if teaching is to occur
smoothly and creatively.

Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC

The Student
It is accepted that they differ in
inherited genes, rearing experiences
and academic opportunities hence they
are expected to respond, understand
and learn in different ways. Taught in
the same learning environment by the
same teacher, students will absorb and
behave differently from
one another.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Content
The third factor influencing
teaching at the base is the content to be
learned. The choice of an appropriate
teaching methodology becomes an
important concern. Teachers vary in
experiences regarding effectiveness
of a strategy.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
The Content
A particular content may be taught
successfully at one time using the
strategy which at another time, with a
different class, would turn out
ineffective. A suitable match between
subject matter and varied strategies is a
product of long applications and close
observation of students’
learning in different classroom.

The Content

Interrelating content
with strategies and students
characteristics is the needed ingredient
to achieve teaching
effectiveness.

21st Century Skills in Teaching

Caring Attitude
A caring attitude is expressed through a
thorough understanding of how the
students feel and react. A teacher who
cares is ready to spend time with her
students and listen to their stories of
successes and failures, help them with
difficult tasks and consistently provide a
supportive and safe learning
environment.

Enthusiasm, Humor and Warmth
There is nothing that can
influence and inspire children to “move
and follow” other than a teacher’s
spontaneous enthusiasm and energy. A
smile evokes a pleasant feeling. Wit and
humor set a good and spirit among
children. It can soothe their feelings
momentarily.

Enthusiasm, Humor and Warmth
It therefore is not surprising
if a teacher with a happy mix of these
traits can make every learning event
something to look forward to with
eagerness and fun. The rapport she
creates can be matched by a lively and
friendly atmosphere, conducive to
animated discussion of the
lesson. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Honesty and Sincerity
A teacher can easily develop
these by modeling. She is a sticker to
truth in her words and actions. She is
genuinely straightforward and offers
assistance wholeheartedly. Easily, she
could make teaching a pleasant,
satisfying and enriching experience that
could transform to a lasting
learning. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Open-mindedness
A respect for the opinions and ideas
expressed by students open avenues for
unrestricted search for information and
evidence. They are encouraged to resolve
issues and problems in a democratic way.
Learning becomes an insightful experience
for them based on an exhaustive
consideration of other individuals’ findings
and explanations.

Fairness and Impartiality
A teacher who treats all her
students in a fair and just manner can
easily win their respect and cordiality.
Being impartial and unbiased in judging
their works and study habits will
instill a positive feeling and
willingness to participate
in class undertakings.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Fairness and Impartiality
Students are sensitive to
discrimination, such that preferential
treatment can result to negative responses
and indifference. Objective suggestions
are easily accepted and gratefully
acknowledge. It inculcates self-confidence
and a friendly attitude
among students.

Passion for Teaching
Passion as associated with teaching
denotes a teacher’s strong feeling,
enthusiasm and intense love for this
magnanimous profession. A teacher’s
desire, emotion and fervor for such
chosen vocation is manifested in her
daily teaching chores, duties and
responsibilities.

Effective Teaching
Effective teaching
connotes utmost commitment
to enable the children achieve the
threefold goals, namely,
gain knowledge,
develop skills and
imbibe values and
Attitudes. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Effective Teaching
To achieve effective teaching,
they must posses a solid background
knowledge of a particular subject area
that is included in the child’s curriculum,
equipped with competence in deciding
and implementing appropriate teaching
methodologies, and capped
with a compassionate and
winsome nature. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Effective Teaching
Effective teaching is described as
“building relationship”. It is based on a
complete understanding of oneself and
how she can relate to others-young
children, peers, parents and
administrators. As much, it stresses the
need to know the interests, abilities and
past experiences of growing children.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
Effective Teaching
Effective teaching is likewise an
“interpersonal enterprise”. It involves
working with children and an adult with
others is put to a test. Growth in school
undertaking is greatly influenced by her
attitudes, personality and rich
experience with the young.

What are the roles of
teachers?

Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC

As a Manager
The teacher is responsible for the
effective management of the various
activities directly related to the
teaching-learning process. The teacher
provides direct instruction, keep
pupils/students on task, asks
appropriate questions and emphasizes
comprehension monitoring
and learning skills. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
As a Motivator
The teacher should set
the mood of learning by way of
stimulating the interest of the

As a Social Catalyst
The teacher as an agent of change should
make things easy for the process of
change. A social catalyst creates a group
of inter-related and interdependent topics
for the pupils/students in the classroom.
She must always assist the learners in the
process of good love – how to see,
how to feel, how to think and
how to love.
Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
As a Facilitator / Instructor
The most important
of a teacher is to facilitate
learning among his
pupils/students. All other tasks
a teacher does are parts of his
sworn duties and
responsibilities. Copyright © 2009. CED-AVMC
As a Guidance Counselor
Every teacher should act as a guidance teacher.
While every school has a guidance counselor, that
should help pupils/students acquire insights and
understanding, abilities, attitudes, behavior and
appreciation necessary to act intelligently and
effectively in dealing with problems of everyday
life, the teacher is in constant contact with her
pupils/students almost everyday during
schooldays, and therefore, she can integrate some
guidance pointers to pupils/students
in her lesson.
