ESO 203A INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

2022-2023 Semester I

1. Overview:

This course will focus on developing tools for (dc and ac) analysis of electrical circuits. The

concepts developed will be used to introduce the working principles of transformers and

electrical machines.

2. Pre-requisites:

None.

3. Course Content:

The course can be subdivided into the following broad topics:

Basic concepts on dc circuits

DC circuit analysis

AC circuit analysis

Three phase circuits

Magnetic circuits and mutually coupled circuits

Transformers

DC machines

Induction machines

Synchronous machines

4. Instructor:

One can contact me during the regular office hours in my office (ACES412A) or drop me an

email at ttripathy[at]iitk.ac.in.

5. Venue (for 2021-22 Sem 1):

The lectures will be conducted in L 11.

6. Time (for 2021-22 Sem 2):

Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 10-11am

7. Course management

The course will be managed on HELLO, IITK powered by MOOKIT on https://hello.iitk.ac.in/.

8. Lab. experiments

The lab. experiments will be conducted on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-5pm.

9. Tutorials

Tutorials will be conducted on Thursdays from 10-11am in L10 & L11.

10. Evaluation Scheme

QUIZZES:

o There will be surprise/announced quizzes during some of the tutorials.

o Weightage: 25 % (for all the quizzes)

MID-SEM EXAM:

o Duration: as specified by the institute

o Weightage: 25 %

END-SEM EXAM:

o Duration: as specified by the institute

o Weightage: 35 %

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS:

o Grading will be done based on attendance and performance.

o Weightage: 15 %

Please note that all the exams are compulsory. Missing the EndSem exam will lead to an

Incomplete (I) grade in the course. The grade (I) will be converted to a suitable grade if the

absentee takes the Make-up EndSem exam after suitable permission(s) from the required

authority. In case the absentee does not appear for the Make-up EndSem for whatsoever reason,

the grade (I) will be converted to grade (F).
