Student researchers from Batangas State University (BSU) bagged the first runner-up in the 3rd

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Energy Youth Awards 2022 at the ASEAN
Energy Business Forum (AEBF) held in Cambodia on September 15 via Zoom and YouTube
Live.

The virtual awarding ceremony was anchored on the theme “Accelerating Energy Transition:
Sustainable Growth and Energy Security” where second-year Bachelor of Science in Chemical
Engineering students secured the first spot in the College Level Poster Infographic Category.

Andrey A. Agmana, Abell A. Alcantara, and Joshua M. Angue along with their Mentor, Engr.
Kim Dowell Panganiban, took pride in their research entitled, “wasteWATTer: Potentiality of
utilizing Aquaculture Wastewater in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) Towards Sustainable Energy
Production and Effluent Treatment in ASEAN Farm.

Their research explored the potential of utilizing aquaculture water waste. Because there is a
large amount of potential for aquaculture to assist in the provision of a nutritious and
environmentally friendly source of protein for future populations.

Aquaculture could assist in mitigating the consequences of human fish consumption on
freshwater and marine water ecosystems by generating food without depleting overfished
surroundings. Aquaculture-produced fish, plants, and shellfish are also utilized to reestablish
species populations in freshwater and saltwater ecosystems.

“We haven’t really thought about winning; we have only thought about the memories, the
experiences, and the thought that at least we’ve tried our very best. But God has proven to us that
we’re not only the best to receive the bacon, but someone who’s all worth it,” Agmana stated.

He added that the difficult trip was rewarding because the crew was able to produce a high-
quality stop-motion video that incorporated their study.

The group was awarded a cash prize, participation certificates, and acknowledgment for their
victory.

The ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) is Southeast Asia’s highest recognition for energy
