1 Mixed past to present conditional
We use this conditional to talk about IS3EHE results of an imagined [BE condition/action:
‘me, 1 Would BE in prison now.
(Zam in prison now. )
‘that thief had’ tricked me, | wouldn't be in prison now.
Ifwe had missed the train, we wouldn't be here to enjoy your wedding.
‘you hadn't woken me up, I might stil be in bed!
We can also use could/might + infinitive in the result clause:
If you hadn't had the operation, you could be really ill now.
We might be in a better financial position if you'd taken that job!
2. Mixed present to past conditional
‘We use this conditional to talk about imagined past results of a [preEnE condition/situation:
If didn’t believe you, | would have left you.
ma (1 didn’t leave you. )
If you Were a better student, you could Wave one to university
( E) (You didn’t go to university. »
FI didn’t believe you, would have left you.
‘tJohn wasn'ta hard worker, he wouldn’t have got a eremotion.
itthad a better memory, ‘I coulld have won the Mastermind competition.
We can also use could have/might have + past participle in the result clause:
Uf we hadn't lost the first match, we might still have been in the competition. (less certain than
would)
You could have gone to university if you were a better student,
( You would have been able to. / You aren’t a good student.)
