Describe an important historical building

and explain its relevance in the past and today

Diocletian's Palace was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourt
century AD in nowadays Split. Diocletian built the massive palace in preparation for his
retirement and the location was chosen carefully since it lies four miles from Salona, the
capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and birthplace of emperor himself. Interesting fact
about palace is connection betwen past and nowadays relevance.

The palace's biggest relevance in the past and nowadays is it's foundation, because the
foundation of the palace is consider to be the foundation of city of Split or Spalato as well.
Since that time population of palace grow, but as palace wasn't enough for all those people
new housing was created around the palace and it is ironically that those housing actually
swallow the palace itself and hide it for a long time from rest of the world.

Second past-nowadays connected relevance is political. In Roman time palace was

close to Salona, the capital of Roman province of Dalmatia. It the first period of Croatian
history palace was in the near proximity of Croatian capital Klis. During the Venetian rule in
Dalmatia, Spalato (where palace is situated) was one of the capitals of the Dalmatia. After the
Venetian rule ended, Spalato began to grow as the second political centre in the Croatian what
it is today after Croatian capital Zagreb.

Only nowadays relevance that was different in the past is cultural. As Roman palace in
Roman times palace wasn't significant and after the palace was shadowed by houses in
Middle Ages palace didn't have any significance what-so-ever. However, in the Modern Ages
palace was rediscovered and since that moment it cultural relevance only grow and for that
reason today is at UNESCO world heritage list.

To conclude, Diocletian's Palace is important part of city of Spalato. Palace's

significance in past as founding moment of the city and political strategic place is represented
today along with new cultural relevance.
Discuss the importance of art and the
significance of different forms of art (paintings, photography, sculptures)

Art, like nature, is everywhere around us and everything humans made can be
considered as an art form. That’s why there is a difference between art for every days use, like
photographies in newspapers, and art that is meant to have artistic values, like photograhies of
Steve McCurry (The Afghan Girl).

When talking about importance of art I would like to point out two things for which I
believe that are most important about art. Firstly, art is the easiest way to express your feeling
and thoughts. Some things cannot be described with the words so the art forms such as
painting provide necessary elements that can help to express yourself. Secondly, art can be
described as universal language that knows no racial, social, cultural and economical barriers.
People from all around the world can look at some painting and have no prejudice about it
author or origin, they can simply enjoy in what they see.

Why is art so important is it because there are different forms of art so people aren’t
limited with the way of expressing themselves. Different forms of art actually represent
people who are all different and all have different ways of expressing and different talents.
People who want to express their feelings will often try to painted them. People who don’t
know to paint well or who have that ability to be in at the right place in right time will try to
express themselves through photographies. Also, there are people who like to work with their
hands and those people will mostly likely try to make sculptures. So we can see that different
art forms are necessary since there are different kinds of people.

To conclude, art is important because it allows us to express our feeling and thoughts
in easier and more material way than with words. Also, art as universal language connects
people on human level. Significant thing about art is that it has many art forms that allow
people to express on different ways, not only one.
Describe the impact of the Internet as a source of information

In history and nowadays people use different sources when researching some topic or
fixing some problem. Before modern technologies people used written books and oral
testimonies to find information they needed. The biggest problem back then was lack of
sources and weak traffic connection between places. Development of modern technologies
solved that problem and the biggest influence on solving that problem had the Internet.

Internet had two great impacts on sharing the source material. Firstly, almost all
sources were transfer into digital form and secondly, those sources are now easy to get excess
to. That’s why we don’t have to travel to distance places to read sources, from example we
don’t need to go from Zadar to Zagreb to read some book since we can read it online. Also,
we can easily check if those kind of sources even exist before, maybe if not digital then in
material medium, before trying to search it.

However, Internet as source of information has some disadvantages since all digital
forms can be false so we must be sure that something is true before using it. For example,
Wikipedia is one of the best known Internet stories that can be example for both advantage
and disadvantage of Internet. Wikipedia in free online encyclopedia that is full of articles that
basically are summing most important facts of some topic from most important sources. The
bad side of it is that everybody can write those articles and that is why Wikipedia contains
false facts. Opposite to Wikipedia is Britannica Online that contains only true facts since only
licensed people can edit it, but it also contains fewer facts than Wikipedia.

To conclude, Internet is probably the biggest gift that modern technologies gave to
researches of all kinds. Thanks to Internet sources of information are easier to get and easier
to use, but we must be careful when using those sources since we can stumble upon false
facts.
Discuss the significance of global role models and
the impact they may have on individuals and societies

People always had somebody they look upon, somebody they wanted to be like. The
interesting fact about role models is that every person, no matter if it is consider to be bad or
good, if it’s well-known or relatively unknown, if it have important part in everyday life or
no, can be a role model. Also, people cannot choose will there be a role models or not.

Process of globalization didn’t change that, but it did provide some people to pass the
borders of its country and even continent to become global role model. Since morality of
mankind in nowadays world is really messed-up, global role models are those persons who
are most expounded in the media, not those who by moral standards should be considered a
role models. Significance of global role models is big because they are evidence that it is
possible to achieve great things and they are actually ideals to whom people are striving
towards. And because people are striving to be like global role models they are changing and
that is actually the biggest impact that global role models have on individuals or groups –
changing who they are. A great example is when David Beckham was playing for Real
Madrid. Back then he had some crazy haircut that is difficult to describe and when Real went
on tour in Japan, lot of football fans had the same haircut.

Of course, there are bad sides of global role models. As I said even bad people can
become a global role models, for example Adolf Hitler is still ideal for some people. Also, for
me the worst examples of global role models are those teenager stars such as Justin(a) Bieber,
all those untalented kids from Twilight movies. Why? Because those kids have the biggest
impact on societies since many young people, who don’t know what they want in the future,
relate to them and get wrong impression about the world and their futures.

To conclude, global role models are very important in nowadays life because they give
us ideals to strive towards, they give us hope that we can achieve something with our lives.
However, problem is that people often change themselves to be more like people they look
upon, but even bigger problem is that everybody can become global role model even if they
are by standards of societies considered to be bad.
Discuss the impact of bridges from either a historical,
cultural or literary perspective

Bridges are one of the rare human achievements that were created from necessarity,
but didn’t change much over past centuries like houses or traveling vehicles. Ever since
people first start to travel in searches for something new, nature put dangerous obstacles in
front of him such as fast rivers or deep canyons. To overcome those obstacles people started
to build bridges. From historical point of view we can see different stages of evolution of
bridges, but also we can see different uses of them.

When talking about evolution of bridges I mean on use of different materials in

construction since building techniques didn’t change so many over the past centuries. First
material people used in construction was wood and nowadays we don’t know much about
those bridges since they are destroyed by either nature or time. The true revolution in
construction bridges came with the usage of stone, because stones are strong and resilient to
both nature and time. That’s way we can say that stone bridges were made to last and that’s
way the stone remain the dominant material in building bridges all until 19 th century. In 19th
century dominant element started to be iron and steel that are easy to manipulate with and that
give certain freedom in construction. That’s why most beautiful bridges in the world are made
from iron and steel, but of course there are some exceptions as Charles Bridge in Prague.

When talking about different uses of bridges I mean on different reasons to build
them. Of course, first reason was to cross to other side of something or simply putted for
traffic, traveling reason. Connected to traveling reason in military reason since many of the
bridges in history were built to allow army easier transfer from one place to another in order
to attack or defend. Third reason is to show power of the country. If we look logically all
bridges can be built on simply way, but than again some bridges like Vasco de Gama in
Portugal and Millau Viaduct in France are built to show how rich, intelligent and confident
those countries are.

To conclude, bridges from historical perspective show three stages of evolution of

using different materials in construction. First there were wooden bridges, then stone bridges
and then iron bridges. Also, from that same perspective we can see that bridges were built
from different reasons and that those same reasons affeceted their simplicity.
