A disability is a condition that makes a person vulnerable and difficult for them to
do certain activities and interact with the world. While 93.6 % of Guyana's
population are healthy, hardworking, and somewhat educated, the other 6.4 % of
Guyana's population suffers from a disability that prevents them from learning the
basic fundamental qualities and knowledge because people always think persons
of disability can't fit in, but let's be honest with ourselves, how would you like it if
you were disabled and had to attend a school where there is no leniency towards
people of your kind and all you faced were acts of mockery?

A common experience of children with a disability is rejection. This may come

from family, friends, neighbors, etc. The child with a disability may have had no
experiences of shared sleepovers, or going over to a friend’s, with school being the
most powerful social development institution in our society, we have a powerful
tool to reverse the rejection of society and bring the child to a state of belonging
with peers. This has an inherent ‘rightness’, whereas the alternative of rejection
from shared experiences with peers over the developmental period goes against all
the basic values of our society.
Principally the belief commonly stated to parents that children with a disability
are better off in segregated education, however, this is unsupported by research.
The opposite is true, based on studies involving thousands of children. Some
findings are Children with an intellectual disability do better academically and
socially when included, let’s take for example The world-famous physicist Stephen
Hawking is disabled but is the smartest person.
Additionally, it has been found that for children who share inclusive schools with
children of disabilities who participated in social integration programs have more
positive attitudes towards children with disabilities. They learned how to match
their language to the ability of the children with handicaps. They engaged in less
disruptive behavior and spent equal time socializing with their peers. In
conclusion, our school should not be segregated but instead Inclusive, providing
all the necessities for both disabled and non-disabled students.
