CT scan of Brain is a common investigation in the ED.

Important to be able to identify abnormalities,and act quickly , cant


rely on radiologists to report, some conditions are life threatening.

Need to know some basic anatomy, to identify cause for the bleeding.

Ask for CTA in SAH / Ask for CTV in cerebral venous thrombosis and
tumours.

Read it systematically. ABBCS approach

A : Assymetry

B : Blood: EDH, SDH, SAH, Parenchymal, Contusions.

B Brain abnormality, including shifts , different types of herniation,


grey white differntiation, MCA sign, Insular ribbon sign, Hypodensity (
ischemia, Infarcts) Changes in encephalitis, Meningitis

C ; CSF ventricles,Effacement, Mid line shift,appearence of


hydrocephalus compared to cerebral atrophy

S look at the skull , on bone window for fractures, Metastasis
