WHAT ARE WE LOOKING AT/ FOR?
• Tonal centre(s)
• Functional harmony: II-V, IV-V etc…
• Chromatic harmony: Sec. V7s etc...
• Chord function, quality and CF
• Scale sources
BASIC GRAND STAFF VOICINGS

• Chromatic V7s: CF 6, 7 & 8

• Polychord Voicings
• Define the basic chord in the bass clef

• Pay attention to spacing and sonority:

General rule of thumb- when the bottom note
is below C2 (octave below Middle C), keep the
intervals wide: a 5th or more.

• Keep extensions and alterations in the upper

register.

• Voice lead for smoother transitions and linear

motion.
• Check that the chords and their alteration/
extensions do not clash with the melody. For
example, a melody on the tonic can clash with a
tonic major 7th chord unless it is voiced
appropriately, as a cluster with the major 7th and
tonic a semitone apart.

• Pay attention to density. Sudden changes in

density can sound quite abrupt.

• Chord shape is also a consideration. For example,

the use of Polychords (triad over V7) is very
effective because of the strength of the triad.
Likewise, 4ths are a popular choice because of
their “angular” characteristic.
