Activity #2: Family Earthquake Emergency Protocol
Instructions: Make a simple emergency protocol on what your family should do
before, during, and after an earthquake

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE
• We will practice Drop, Cover, and Hold with my family.
• Prepare any safety gear that you can use during an earthquake.
• Make a family emergency communications plan that includes a contact
who lives outside of the state. If you get separated, have a plan for where
you will meet up.
• Construct a supply kit that contains enough food and water to last several
days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher, and a whistle, among other things.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE
• Do the Drop, Cover and Hold.
• When an earthquake strikes, don't panic and evacuate carefully.
• If you're indoors, stand against a wall towards the center of the structure,
stand in a doorway, or crawl beneath large pieces of furniture (a desk or
table).
• And when you're outdoors, keep your distance from power wires and
anything else that might fall.
• Leave the kitchen or any other potentially dangerous area.
AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
• For injuries, check on yourself and others. Help anyone who needs first
aid in obtaining it.
• Make a call on the phone or turn on the radio. If it's not an emergency,
avoid using the phone at all costs.
• Be careful around broken glass and debris.
• Don’t panic and prepare for an Afterschock.
