Title or Name of Artwork: The Starry Night
Year Created: 1889
Dimension: 73.7cm x 92.1 cm
Content:
This painting is inspired by van Gogh’s night sky view form his window in
Southern France. There is a close-up view of the cypress, the moon on the right side,
and the stars on the left. The dominant colors are blue, yellow, and white which gives it
a chill perception of it. The overall impact is delivered by the thickly laid-on paint of
brushstrokes. Each element found is formed through a series of short lines flowing in
curved, downward, and upward motions.
Artwork 2.
This is portrait of van Gogh’s close friend, Joseph Roulin, whom he found
comfort and companionship when he became lonely and isolated due to a cancelled art
opportunity. It’s background is filled with pulpy, mossy-like colour with some varying
flowers scattered around in a vine-like form while Roulin, himself, is painted wearing his
favourite uniform with the shade of blue and yellow buttons. His proud beard also made
the portrait scream with pride and authority.
