H&m - ethical or unethical?

- INTRODUCTION: Producing clothes proved to be detrimental to the environment in general,

and fast fashion companies like H&M have come out with eco-collections that claimed to reduce
the harms involved. But is it that they are greenwashing and luring customers to become more
mindful when purchasing their own products?

- MATERIALS: H&M uses polyester as well as PET (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate) as main
materials and cotton, which accounts for roughly 52% of total fiber collection for the former and
24% for the latter. This material was also found in plastic bottles, but unfortunately,
manufacturers only dedicated approximately 30% to producing bottles, and the other 60% goes
to textiles.

- HARMFUL TO ENVIRONMENT: In order to produce PET, petroleum are used and they
consume a lot of energy and release CO2, as well as acids and ammonia into the public’s water
supply.

- SUSTAINABILITY: With H&M Conscious T-shirt, you can find out where it was
manufactured, hence enabling consumers to know whether it is eco-friendly or not. By doing
this, buyers are allowed to cross-check brands’ actions against their words and hold them
accountable for their sustainability claims.
