SUMMARY In words with two or more syllables, one syllable is extra-long and extra-clear. We say that this syllable has primary stress. Stress is an important part of making yourself understood when speaking English. Sometimes it is hard to know which syllable to stress. Fortunately, there are general rules that can help.
