Chapter 16 : Scientific Inquiry
Summary
The scientists are like explorers who discover something what others follow with their curious minds. They
work out a plan, purify it and bring out the main idea out of it. By their various observations they also tell us not
to believe in any phenomenon until any concrete proof is obtained. Rather they ask us to combine all the
concrete results of the experiments and observations and conclude it with correct interpretation.
B. Answer the questions in a few lines each.
1. How do scientists make new discoveries?
Ans. The scientists observe and experiment and move step by step which lead to new discoveries.
2. How does one reach a hypothesis?
Ans. When a scientist formulates a plan, he purifies it, explains the main idea and the most important point
associated with it, and then he reaches to the hypothesis.
3. What comprises one’s observations?
Ans. A person’s observation comprises of all the happenings that he or she records carefully.
4. What should a scientist collect during an experiment?
Ans. A scientist should collect carefully all the data before starting an experiment.
5. What are the four key steps in a scientific process, according to the poem?
Ans. The four key steps in a scientific process are: concrete things that are collected, trials that are tested,
next is interpretation and then is the result.
C. Answer the questions with reference to context.
1. What things change and what things stick/ Record the outcomes and effects.
a. What does ‘stick’ mean here?
Ans. Here ‘stick’ means scientific observations which do not change and remain the same.
b. What is the poet referring to in the first line?
Ans. The poet is referring to the observation and the experimentation.
c. What is the difference between outcomes and effects?
Ans. Outcomes are the results of the experiments whereas effects are changes brought by the outcomes.
2. Interpretation is the key/ Results are where you end the quest.
a. What is the ‘quest’ that the poet is referring to?
Ans. ‘Quest’ is the search to understand a phenomenon better.
b. What is the key to finding the ‘results’?
Ans. Interpretation and experimentation are the keys to finding the results.
c. What should you combine to get the ‘result'?
Ans. We should combine our data collection as per our observation, experiment accordingly and reach to
the result.
