Chapter-6 (Call For Peace)


Summary:

‘Call for Peace ‘is an extract from the poem ‘The Song of Hiawatha’, written by H.W. Longfellow. It is about the
American Indians, the original inhabitants of America. They are tribals. They are often warring.In the poem, Gitche
Manito is the creator, the God who looks at the warring tribes with love and concern like a father. He is worried about
their fights so he tries to calm them.Gitche Manito’s voice is as grand as the sound of water falling from great height
into deep holes, from far off.Gitche Manito tells the tribals that when he has given them lands, streams and marshes
with plenty of animals to hunt from then what is the reason behind their fighting.He asks them further that why they
are yet not satisfied and hunt each other. He says that he is tired of their battles and their prayers of revenge. Finally
he tells them that their strength lies in their unity and danger lies in their discord. So they should be at peace as
brothers and live together.

Ans. The tribes are not contented because they are at war with each otherand full of disagreement.They used to argue
strongly with each other.

Ans. The poet uses the figure of speech,paradox in these lines. As two contradictory ideas; content and hunt are mentioned.
The lines ultimately convince to maintain harmony and be at peace.

Ans. Gitche Manito’s words of wisdom are also words of warning because if the people continue to quarrel and argue in this
way the world will be full of death, destruction and disagreement. Happiness and contentment will lose its
importance; sorrow and vengeance will seize the world.

2. What advice does he give his children?

Ans. He advises his children to live in peace, harmony and unitedly because strength lies in unity. He also asks his children to
stop fighting and be contented with what they have.
