TRADITIONAL AND

MODERN
BIOTECHNOLOGY
MARK VINCENT R. CABACUNGAN
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, with 85% level of accuracy, the students
would be able to:
✓ define traditional biotechnology and modern
biotechnology;
✓ differentiate traditional and modern biotechnology;
✓ identify the color codes of biotechnology; and,
✓ trace the historical foundations of biotechnology
Biotechnology
-comes from the Greek word bios meaning life and
technikos meaning human knowledge and skills
-coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky
-the use of living organisms and their products for health,
social, and economic purposes
-the application of technology to improve a biological
organism

-the use of living systems and organisms to develop or

make useful products or any technological application that
uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives
thereof, to make or modify products or processes for
specific use
Branches of Biotechnology
1. Blue Biotechnology
-encompasses processes in marine and aquatic environments, such as controlling
the proliferation of noxious water-borne organisms

2. Red Biotechnology
-involves medical processes such as getting organisms to produce new drugs
and used stem cells to regenerate damaged human tissues or perhaps regrow
entire organ
3. Green Biotechnology
-applies to agricultural processes such as producing pest-resistant crops, disease-
resistant animals, and environmental-friendly development

4. Violet Biotechnology
-handles the compliance, law, and ethical issues that arise within the field

5. White Biotechnology
-involves industrial processes such as the production of new chemicals or the
development of new fuels for vehicles

6. Gold Biotechnology
-also known as bioinformatics, is a cross between biological processes and
computing, that plays a key role in biological data

7. Yellow Biotechnology
-refers to the processes that aid food production which includes the popular
application of fermentation in the likes of cheese and alcohol production

8. Dark Biotechnology
-references the ability to use biotechnology for weapons and warfare
