Mobile manufacturers have been tracking their customers locations for marketing and advertisement
purposes as they sell this data to companies. They also offer location-based services such as GPS maps
which allow the users to navigate any area but gives an active and accurate representation of their
whereabouts. Even without an internet connection law enforcement can use radio tower pings to
accurately pinpoint a mobiles location over a massive area. Tracking this data can help agencies target
their market audience more effectively and also offer law enforcement location aid and emergency
services accurate whereabouts while offering better location services to users that are only possible with
this information tracking.
2. Do you think mobile phone customers should be able to turn tracking off? Should customers be
informed when they are being tracked? Why or why not?
Yes, I think that it is very important for the customer to have the choice of being tracked or being off the
grid at any given moment at the press of a button. It is a very important and private piece of information
that should be consented for every time before it is used so that we are aware of what information is
being used through both GPS and radio towers. For emergency services when someone calls the rescue
hotline, they should be able to ping your location but location identity without consent or warrants is
not okay for any consumer as it is a breach of privacy.
3. Do you think mobile phone tracking is a violation of a person’s privacy? Why or why not?
I do believe that it is a breach of privacy because it allows for the government to access all your
information with ease from your cellphone company. Many companies do not follow any regulations
about sharing this information which is deeply concerning. Many groups online have been calling for
proper privacy laws to be legislated which is something I must support to because not having control
over your own data does not make sense.
