What generation am I?

I am part of the Gen Z generation. I was born in 1997 and I grew up with
cellphones, internet and technology, although not to the level of the new
generation. It was more of a transition, between the old ideas and the new
ideas, creating a unique mix of traditional and modern, making an entire
generation of confused, anxious young people without a clue into how to live
or what to do in the world. I honestly believe this to be true in general, as I
have felt like this and many people of my generation feel this way, too. I
believe it is a result of not having much time to be free enough to develop true
personalities, as the internet was in its peak of popularity and everyone was
enjoying the infinite possibilities it offered and created a personality that
would represent their “repressed” side. Obviously, millennials went through
the same process, with the difference that there was a cultural and
technological change when Gen Z children were still very young and
developing, so they were more affected growing up. To give an example, I was
8 years old when I first started using a computer but it was never an everyday
hobby since the internet connection was very slow, and it only took the world
around 6 years to advance enough technologically that I could have internet
fast enough to get addicted to it, whereas a millennial might have had their
first phone or computer in their late teens/early adulthood.

All of these things have affected who I am as an individual. Being exposed to

infinite information and not being able to retain all of it is creating an
emotional and existential waste that manifests in negative emotions, bad
habits and nihilistic feelings. I feel that we are the generation that broke with

the mold and stopped many traditions that had existed for decades. One
example is many people now don’t want to have children, get married or even
settle in one job. A big portion of the demographic doesn’t have jobs, doesn’t
study and can’t find any motivation to get off the couch. I also think that one
has the duty to escape these stereotypes and learn that living through a certain
period of time in history will always define you, but you can always change
that definition by changing who you are every day into a better version of you.
I think Gen Z is the generation to start a domino effect that will affect the
future generations in big ways, giving me a feeling of power to overcome my
limitations and evolve eternally.
