Aim: To analyse the given salt for acid radicals and basic radicals

Physical Characteristics:
State: Solid
Colour: White
Odour: Have Characteristic smell
Solubility: Soluble in water
Experiment Observation Inference
1. Dry test tube heating: Evolution of vapour with vinegar CH3COO- may be present
A pinch of the sample is heated in smell, turns blue litmus red
a dry test tube
2. Flame Test:
Flame test is performed with A Pale blue flame is observed Pb2+ may be present
conc. HCl

3. Borax bead test:

A. Colour of the bead in Oxidising
flame- No characteristic observation in Cu2+ , Fe2+, Fe3+,Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+
B. Colour of the bead in Reducing both the flame. may be absent.
flame-
4. Dil. H2SO4 test: No characteristic observation CO32-, S2-, NO2-, SO32- may be
A pinch of the sample is added to absent
dil. H2SO4 in a test tube and then
it is heated
5. Conc. H2SO4 test: Evolution of colourless vapour CH3COO- may be present
A pinch of the sample is added to with vinegar smell, turns blue
conc. H2SO4 in a test tube and litmus red.
then it is heated
6. Test for NH4+: No ammonia gas is evolved NH4+ is absent
A pinch of the sample is heated
with conc. NaOH solution
7. Wet Test For Acetate ion : (a) Evolution of colourless vapour CH3COO-(a) is present and
(a) To the sample , Oxalic Acid with vinegar smell, turns blue confirmed
and few drops of Water is added. litmus red.
(b) Ester Test : To a small
quantity of the sample ,2ml of (b) Pleasant fruity smell of ester. CH3COO-(a) is present and
conc. H2SO4 is added and heated. confirmed.
Then 1 ml of ethanol is added and
poured into a beaker with water,
stirred.

8. Preparation of Original Solution is obtained It is labelled as Original Solution

Solution (O.S.): (O.S.)
A small portion of the sample is
dissolved in water by shaking and
the following tests are carried out
with this solution
9. To a part of the O.S., 1-2 ml of White ppt. is formed Group I i.e Pb2+ is present
dil. HCl is added
10. Through the above solution, A black ppt. is formed Group II present (Pb2+ is present)
H2S is passed
11. Confirmatory test for Pb2+:
(i) (a)To a part of O.S KI Yellow PPT. is formed Pb2+ is confirmed
solution is added.

(b) To another part of O.S Yellow PPT. is formed Pb2+ is confirmed

K2CrO4 solution is added .
Result: The given salt contains Pb2+ as basic radical and CH3COO- as acid radicals. Therefore, the given
salt is Pb(CH3COO- )2
