MT13-B1
ACT#1

Technical writing is a type of writing where the author is writing about a

particular subject that requires direction, instruction, or explanation. This
writing style has a very different purpose and characteristics than other
writing styles, such as creative writing, academic writing, or business
writing.

*TYPES OF WRITING

Expository: This type of writing is used to explain a concept and share

information with a broader audience. Expository writing provides evidence,
statistics, or results and focuses on the facts of a certain topic. This type is
not meant to express opinions.

Descriptive: This type of writing is used to depict imagery to create a clear

picture in the mind of the reader. This method helps the readers become
more connected to the writing by appealing to their senses. Descriptive
writing employs literary techniques such as similes, metaphors, allegory,
etc, to engage the audience.

Narrative:  Often seen in longer writing samples, the purpose of this

writing style is to share information in the context of a story. Narratives
should include characters, conflicts, and settings

Persuasive:  For this writing style, the writer is trying to convince the

reader of the validity of a certain position or argument. Persuasive writing
includes the writers’ opinions and provides justifications and evidence to
support their claims .

Creative writing: is any form of writing that exists outside of journalism,

business writing, or academic writing. It expresses an author's unique
voice, writing style, thoughts, and ideas in an engaging and imaginative

manner

Characteristics of Effective Technical Writing

Technical writing is meant to get a job done.

Everything else is secondary. If the writing style is interesting, so much the better. There
are six basic characteristics of technical writing:

1.     Clarity:  The written document must convey a single meaning that the reader can
easily understand.
Unclear technical writing leads to wasted time, money, and resources.

2.     Accuracy:  This means not only being careful to avoid errors in recording facts;
it also means freedom from bias or subjectivity. If readers suspect you are slanting
information by overstating the significance of a particular point, they have every right to
doubt the validity of the entire document.

3.     Comprehensiveness:  A comprehensive technical document provides all the

information its readers will need.
Readers who must act on a document need to be able to apply the information efficiently
and effectively.

4.     Accessibility:  This refers to the ease with which readers can locate the
information they seek. Topic sentences should be used at the beginning of paragraphs.
The thesis Statement should be identifiable in the introductory paragraph.

5.     Conciseness:  To be useful, technical writing must be concise. The longer a

document is, the more difficult it is to use, for the obvious reason that it takes more of
the reader’s time. A document must strive to balance the claims of clarity, conciseness,
and comprehensiveness; it must be long enough to be clear given the audience, purpose,
and subject –but not a word longer.

6.     Correctness:  Good technical writing observes the conventions of grammar,

spelling, punctuation, and usage. Leaving sloppy grammar errors in your writing is like
wearing a soup-stained shirt to a business meeting: it will distract your readers and may
make them doubt the importance of your information.

*The importance of technical writing can be seen in various applications,

both in consumer products and the industrial environment. Without clear, precise paper
that outlines the specifications and directions for use, products can become meaningless
at best and dangerous at worst. The technical report provides a context to products and
processes and allows them to be used safely and as intended. While it may not be
impossible to construct and use equipment and techniques without reading the
technical documents, technical writing provides some assurances that the product is
being used as intended.
