Valmet Retention Measurement

The ultimate wet end sensor for paper, board and tissue machines

1
Valmet’s proven way to stabilize wet end

An online measurement
you can trust
The new Valmet Retention Measure-
ment is a fifth-generation sensor for
the continuous measurement of total
and true ash consistencies. Valmet
was the first with wet end retention
control more than thirty years ago
and now has a wealth of experience in
perfecting the optimum measurement
principles and control strategies. The
multiple wavelength optical measure-
ment can handle even the most com-
plex furnishes, providing a real-time
picture of true wet end conditions.
It is able to measure consistencies in
a wide range, up to 2% of total and
1% ash consistencies. For closed loop
control, individual sensors are needed
to provide continuous measurement
information from headbox and white-
water flows. Pre-calibration models
for various pulp types now make it
possible to secure valid measurement
results from day one with the ability
to store up to 8 different models for
smooth grade changes.

Reduced breaks
An unstable wet end exacts a higher
cost from a paper machine operation
than merely sheet quality variations.
This means a major effect on machine
efficiency breaks occurs at the weak-
est point, it is not the average value
of stock consistency and ash content
but the extreme values (weakest
points) that adversely affect runnabil-
ity. Stabilizing wet end consistencies
and sheet ash content move these
extremes away from the danger zone Valmet retention control: reduction of breaks
to provide quality improvements and
runnability gains.

Breaktime ash controls

Ash content can be controlled with
continuous quality target-oriented
feedback from web scanning mea-
surements. During breaks when no
scanner signals are available, control
of the filler can be achieved with the
headbox ash measurement to avoid a
buildup of filler in the short circula-
tion and ensure that the paper ash
is on target after the break. Valmet’s
extensive experience in the wet end
can provide immediate results on
your paper machine.
