Engineering Management requires specialized training in multiple disciplines of science such as

electrical, systems, and the integration of software to manage the development of specialized
projects. This same knowledge allows for the integration and contribution of other to expand the
core task. General management encompasses the work of various personnel and organizations to
accomplish a common task.
Engineer managers innovate and assist the project by carrying out plans or requirements and
linking upper and lower management. General Management would be involved at the
programmatic level where general management would need to ensure specialized tasks are
completed by Engineering Management. For example, in a recent case study provided by IBM
Planning Analytics, GKN Aerospace transformed their workforce planning by using their IBM
cloud to track manufacturers around the world that have specific skills tailored to aerospace
engineering. (GKN Aerospace, n.d.) This allowed GKN to better track skills based on location
around the world specific to engineering. As a result, using previous experience with the cloud to
track finances and human resources, they now had the capability to allocate jobs based on the
need to manufacture aerospace parts around the world. Without IBM’s engineered cloud
solution, GKN Aerospace would not be able to meet its’ engineering needs and without current
GKN cloud skills, implementation of specialized cloud tools would be impossible.
