It is very important that the learner will cooperate in by using this module page
by page and completing all the activities asked. At the end learning outcome is
evaluated based the different task given to you. Through your cooperation in this kind
of flexible learning delivery, understanding and designing Electrical Systems in
Residential, Commercial and Industrial Buildings is very much possible. It is expected
that after using this module you will become more prepared to the next lesson about
the Basics of Cost Estimation, lighting design principles and energy efficient lighting
systems in Residential, commercial and Industrial buildings.
Overview
This part contains wiring design examples that will illustrate the application of
the provisions of the Philippine Electrical Code. Examples are gathered from the PEC
which covers typically the actual situations encountered by the practitioner. It
illustrates how to determine the sizes of branch circuits, feeders and services. Typical
single family and multi-family dwelling units of different demand load are presented
considering the single phase and three phase service systems. Single and multiple
motor examples illustrate how to size the branch circuit conductors and overload
protection. Also examples on systems with fire pump to illustrate its special
requirement and a system with a voltage regulator.
Learning Outcomes

a. Circuit b. safety switch
b. Panel board d. Circuit breaker
In this module we will discuss and explain how to make an electrical layout and
power layout. But before that we will consider the general electrical symbols provided
in the Philippine Electrical Code. These symbols are the one to be used in the drawing
of electrical and power layout from the appendix A Electrical Symbols of the PEC.
Selection of conductors
The types and sizes of conductors for 0 through 2000 volts refer to ampacity
table of article 3.10 and section 3.10.1.15 that pertains to such tables (tables 3.10.1.16
through 3.10.1.21 and the notes that pertain to such tables) PEC 2009. For the
minimum size of service entrance conductor, see section 2.30.4.3. conductor
ampacities given in these examples for copper wires are based on ambient air
Voltage
For the uniform application of the provisions of articles 2.10, 2.15, and 2.20, a
nominal voltage of 230 volts is used in computing the ampere load on the conductor.
Grounding
In conformance to the provision of the code on grounding, illustration herein
show partial grounding requirements. Feeder and circuit wires indicated in the
examples are for phase wires only. For sizes of grounding conductors and electrodes
see tables 2.50.3.17 and 2.50.6.13 respectively of PEC 2009.
Example D
For the materials you will be estimating the numbers of lighting outlet,
convenience outlet, etc. based on the design layout, for the length of conduit and
conductors you will base their length on the floor plan specifications where you will be
installing the conductors and conduit, you will also use tables on the PEC for the
number of conductors per conduit depending on the size of the conductors to be
installed.
Also, side from providing the list of the materials you will also look for the prices
per unit of the materials through internet or hardware to provide the actual cost
estimate of the material. From that you can estimate the cost of all the material needed
in the electrical system to be installed in the building.
Although estimate is an approximate calculation or judgment of the value,
number, quantity, or extent of something like materials it is necessary that the value
we will be arriving is not that far from the actual materials needed. In this way we can
minimize the waste or loss in materials or financial expenses.
• Draw/look for floor plan of your dreamed residence at least 3-storey with
at least 150 m2. From that make a lighting layout, power layout. Include the
necessary appliances that you would like to install, Example ACU, Range,
• Provide the necessary computation for the loads, Circuit requirements,
service entrance conductor, service equipment.
• Provide the one line diagram/riser with the corresponding
label/specifications.
• Provide the bill of materials or the cost estimate for the electrical system of
the building.
note: Activities given below will be recorded and to be submitted thru my email, lot of
time may be spent no reason for not submission.
