Introduction

Electrical System Design

This module will serve as an alternative learning material to usual way of

classroom teaching and learning delivery. The instructor will facilitate and explain the
module to the students to achieve its expected learning outcomes, activities and to
ensure that they will learn amidst of pandemic.

This material discusses about the sample interpretation of the Philippine

Electrical Code and other electrical codes, Design of Residential Electrical System it
includes lighting layout, power layout, electrical loads, ratings of branch circuit wiring
and specifications of protective devices.

It is very important that the learner will cooperate in by using this module page

Chapter I

Residential Electrical Systems Design

Overview

An Electrical System is one where conductors and Equipment are

interconnected to sources of potential difference for distribution and/or utilization of
electrical energy.

This part contains wiring design examples that will illustrate the application of
the provisions of the Philippine Electrical Code. Examples are gathered from the PEC
which covers typically the actual situations encountered by the practitioner. It
illustrates how to determine the sizes of branch circuits, feeders and services. Typical
single family and multi-family dwelling units of different demand load are presented
considering the single phase and three phase service systems. Single and multiple
motor examples illustrate how to size the branch circuit conductors and overload
protection. Also examples on systems with fire pump to illustrate its special
requirement and a system with a voltage regulator.

Learning Outcomes

After studying this course, the student should be able to

➢ Design an Electrical system for Residential Building.

➢ Design an Electrical system for Commercial Building

Design of electrical layout

In this module we will discuss and explain how to make an electrical layout and
power layout. But before that we will consider the general electrical symbols provided
in the Philippine Electrical Code. These symbols are the one to be used in the drawing
of electrical and power layout from the appendix A Electrical Symbols of the PEC.

Wiring Design Examples

It will contain wiring design examples to illustrate the application of some

provision on the PEC. It illustrates how to determine the size of branch circuits, feeder
and services. Typical single family and multi family dwelling units of different demand
load are presented considering the single phase and three phase service systems.
Single and multiple motor examples illustrate how to size the branch circuit
conductors and overload protection schemes are presented. Also examples on systems
with fire pump to illustrate its special requirement and a system with a voltage
regulator are also included.

Branch circuit Requirement

For small single-family dwelling unit having a floor area of not more than 50
square meters with a load not exceeding 3,680 volt amperes, the code permits the use
of only one circuit as illustrated in example D note: see section 2.10.1.11(d) for the
minimum number of branch circuit required, see section 2.10.1.11(a) to (c) PEC 2009

Feeder or service load calculation

For feeder and service load calculations, see example it follows the method
provided in part 2.20.2 and the optional calculation method of part 2.20.3.

Selection of conductors
The types and sizes of conductors for 0 through 2000 volts refer to ampacity
table of article 3.10 and section 3.10.1.15 that pertains to such tables (tables 3.10.1.16
through 3.10.1.21 and the notes that pertain to such tables) PEC 2009. For the
minimum size of service entrance conductor, see section 2.30.4.3. conductor
ampacities given in these examples for copper wires are based on ambient air

WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)

temperature of 30°C except specified otherwise. In the examples given, conductors are
selected such that their ampacities are at least 125% of the continuous current through
the conductor. Voltage drops, however, have not been considered in the selection.

Selection of overcurrent protection

The standard ratings for fuses and inverse time circuit breakers are listed in
section 2.40.1.6. maximum rating or setting of motor branch circuit, short circuit and
ground fault protective devices are given in table 4.30.14.6 PEC 2009.

Voltage
For the uniform application of the provisions of articles 2.10, 2.15, and 2.20, a
nominal voltage of 230 volts is used in computing the ampere load on the conductor.

Grounding
In conformance to the provision of the code on grounding, illustration herein
show partial grounding requirements. Feeder and circuit wires indicated in the
examples are for phase wires only. For sizes of grounding conductors and electrodes
see tables 2.50.3.17 and 2.50.6.13 respectively of PEC 2009.

Allowance of future expansion

It is advisable to use larger service conductors and the corresponding
overcurrent protective device to accommodate future loads depending on the
anticipated expansion.

Materials and Cost Estimate

For the materials you will be estimating the numbers of lighting outlet,
convenience outlet, etc. based on the design layout, for the length of conduit and
conductors you will base their length on the floor plan specifications where you will be
installing the conductors and conduit, you will also use tables on the PEC for the
number of conductors per conduit depending on the size of the conductors to be
installed.
Also, side from providing the list of the materials you will also look for the prices
per unit of the materials through internet or hardware to provide the actual cost
estimate of the material. From that you can estimate the cost of all the material needed
in the electrical system to be installed in the building.
Although estimate is an approximate calculation or judgment of the value,
number, quantity, or extent of something like materials it is necessary that the value
we will be arriving is not that far from the actual materials needed. In this way we can
minimize the waste or loss in materials or financial expenses.

WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)

Below is the sample of material estimate from Electrical Layout and Estimate.
You can add an additional column for the price per unit, total amount of a certain
material. So you can compute the total cost of the materials needed in the building.
