the questions from 56 to 65.
KIMBERLY
By Elaine Dobbs – External Correspondent
Every summer, thousands of kids from across the US flock to Kimberly, a once affluent, ex-mining
village in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Wearing baggy pants, oversized T-shirts and cool sneakers,
they blare hip-hop and punk rock music from their boomboxes. But they don’t bring cell phones to this
desolate place; it’s almost impossible to get reception here. So, what brings them to this community in the
middle of nowhere, a place with a population of slightly over 120, where the one small grocery store
still has a hitching post for horses?
Kimberly Summer Camp does, and it’s not your run-of-the-mill summer experience. It’s regarded as
the centre of the universe for the extreme sport set, where every aspiring skateboarder, in-line skater and
biker dreams of one day setting foot. Interest in action sports, their alternative term, is growing in leaps
and bounds while participation in organized sports such as football, baseball and basketball is on the
decline. Driving the trend are the X Games, which showcase the world’s best action-sport athletes, who
compete for more than $1 million in prizes every year. “The X Games were first held in 1995,” says Rob
Lee, Kimberly’s director. “Most people think that we jumped on the bandwagon after they were held; it
was actually the reverse.” Whatever the case may be, the event has not only legitimized action sports,
but it has created a demand for alternative summer camps like Kimberly.
More than 150 professional action-sport athletes train at Kimberly each year, solidifying the camp’s
prestigious status and giving the young campers a rare opportunity to mingle with their idols. Kimberly
was established in the early 1970s as a top-notch training facility for elite gymnasts, but enrolment nose-
dived in the late 1970s when the US decided to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In response, the
camp built a BMX track and began holding local competitions. The gamble paid off, and BMX ramps and
coaching were added to the program in 1982. Skateboarding joined the line-up in 1988, followed by in-
line skating, mountain biking and parkour in the years that followed.
Today Kimberly is crammed with skate bowls, ramps, dirt jumps, trampolines and half-pipes, drawing
around 10,000 kids each summer. “It’s a great place to learn the latest tricks and we don’t get harassed by
folks who want to take a nap in the afternoon,” says Dave Denny, one of the campers. “There are no
rules, no boundaries. We can skate all day; after the morning lesson, we’re free for the rest of the day,”
adds Felicia Brown.

Trang 4/8 - Mã đề thi 210

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” says Carol Skinner, whose son, Matt, went to Kimberly this
summer. “All you hear is the sound of wheels turning and kids egging each other on; the kids are so
obedient. There’s no yelling or screaming – and Matt was more mature when he came back home; that
alone was worth the $500 fee,” she adds.
Kimberly takes a hard line, though, when it comes to safety, requiring campers to wear helmets as well
as knee and elbow pads. In-line skaters must also wear wrist guards and staff members are stationed on
decks around the camp to enforce safety rules. But still, there are daily spills, resulting in sprained fingers,
bruises and the occasional broken arm or leg. “Anytime kids put wheels under their feet, there will be
more chance of them getting hurt than when they’re in front of their computer, game console or television
set, so you can never totally rule out accidents,” says Rob Lee. “However, according to official US
statistics, the injury rate for action sports is no worse than it is for organized sports,” he adds.
