Who We Are

The 3M Identification and Converter Systems Division manufactures and markets a broad
range of high-performance, pressure-sensitive, components and systems for marking,
promoting and decorating consumable and durable goods. Primary product lines are:
laminating adhesives and spacers used for membrane switches and nameplate attachment;
label stocks and printable tapes.
These products are sold to converters – value-added resellers – who print, die-cut,
laminate and perform other processes which modify and add value to our products. These
value-added products are then resold for an ultimate use.
Our goal is to provide our converter and end user customers with the highest performing
and most cost effective systems for marking and fabricating consumer and durable goods
through innovation, technical and marketing excellence, product consistency and
dedication to customer service.

Adhesion is the molecular force of attraction between unlike
materials. The strength of attraction is determined by the surface Wettability Principle
energy of the material. The higher the surface energy, the greater
the molecular attraction. The lower the surface energy, the weaker
the attractive forces.
Greater molecular attraction results in increased contact between
an adhesive and substrate. In other words, on a high surface
energy material, the adhesive can flow (or “wet-out”)
to assure a stronger bond.
Consider an automobile that has not been waxed for a long time.
When water contacts the surface it spreads in large puddles.
The unwaxed car surface exhibits high surface energy –
the molecular attraction allows the water to flow.
In comparison, water beads up into small spheres on a freshly
waxed car. It is an example of low surface energy – the liquid
(or adhesive) does not flow out.

Impact-Dot Matrix Printable Film Label Stocks

Impact or Dot Matrix Technology

A computer controlled printhead produces a series of dots in a pattern that forms a
printed character. The dots are produced when a series of pins strikes an inked ribbon.
The ink is then transferred to the media which dries by evaporation and/or absorption.

Strengths:
• Outdoor durability with film facestocks.
• Inexpensive.
• Flexible formats.
• Ribbons can be used for multiple passes.
• Multi-part forms printing.

Limitations:
• Print resolution (may not be suited for small type or high density bar codes).
• Requires a ribbon.
• High noise level.

These label stocks are designed for printing variable information such as bar codes and
serial numbers for a variety of applications. We offer a variety of adhesives and adhesive
coat weights for demanding applications. These label stocks can also be written on with
ball point pens.

Some typical applications include:

• Rating plates on durable goods.
• Fixed asset identification labels.
• Bar code labels.
• Decorative nameplates and faceplates.
• Cost effective substitutes for metal stamped, riveted plates.

Thermal Transfer Film Label Stocks

Thermal Transfer Printing Technology

A computer controlled printhead contains an array of tiny resistive elements that heat up.
A dry inked ribbon is passed across the printhead and the heat turns the ink to a semi-
liquid state and transfers the ink from the ribbon to the facestock that solidifies
on contact.

Strengths:
• Print resolution (compatible with high density bar codes).
• High print contrast.
• Greater printer reliability with few moving parts.
• Printhead protected from contact with the label stock by the ribbon.
• Multi-color capability.
• Quiet operation.
• Wax ribbons for general purpose use and resin ribbons for high performance
applications.

Limitations:
• Limited to smooth facestocks.
• Limited printer width (usually less than 6").
• Requires a ribbon.
• Ribbons can’t be used for multiple passes.

3M offers a wide variety of thermal transfer film label stocks with a variety of colors and
adhesives. We also offer a heavy coat weight of adhesive on a few label stocks for the
most demanding applications.

Some typical applications are:

• Bar code labels and rating plate labels.
• Property identification.
• Durable goods labeling.

Laser Imageable Film Label Stocks

Laser Toner Printing Technology

A laser is used to “image” a charged rotating photoconductive drum. The charge on
the drum in the imaged area attracts toner powder as the drum rotates. The toner is
transferred to the facestock and is usually fused by high temperature rollers. Some newer
printers use a flash fusion process which heats only the toner-printed area and not the
entire label stock.

Strengths:
• Compatible with high density bar codes.
• High print contrast.
• Quiet operation.
• Large volumes and high speeds are possible.
• New continuous-fed printers are more tolerant of label stocks.

Limitations:
• High heat on rollers used to fuse toner can shrink or distort some facestocks.
• Curling of label stock can occur due to high heat and can lead to jamming of the printer.
• High-performance toner options are not widely available.
• While sheet-fed printers are widely available, they tend to have problems printing
label stocks.
• The thick caliper of label stocks can cause curling, slippage, or drag through the printer.

3M offers a variety of laser imageable film label stocks for both continuous fed and sheet
fed printers. Our ultra-durable polyesters and aggressive adhesives are suitable for the
most demanding applications.
Some typical applications are:
• Chemical drum labeling.
• Inventory, bin and in-process item labeling.
• Fixed asset labeling.
• Durable goods identification.
• Address labels, promotional labels and magnetic media labeling.

A computer guided laser beam evaporates a controlled pattern in a substrate. The laser
beam evaporates the top film layer to expose the second color layer.

Strengths:
• Laser etching provides permanent images in the film.
• Long-term durability.
• Excellent temperature, chemical and environmental resistance.
• Proper laser etching results in 100 percent bar code readability.

Limitations:
• Laser marking processes require exhaust systems with an activated charcoal filter.
• Laser marking systems are not readily available.
• Laser marking systems are expensive.

3M’s laser markable label stock offers the greatest measure of flexibility. Due to the
possibility of free programming of the laser, various different types of texts, logos and
detailed diagrams can be produced in irregular sequences. The laser cuts every desired
label format without the need of tools.

Some typical applications are:

• Durable goods marking.
• Can also be used for tamper-indicating applications because of the brittle facestock.
• Rating plates.
• Asset tags.
• Electronic component labeling.

Tamper-indicating Film Label Stocks
3M offers two types of tamper indicating film materials:
Our destructible vinyls are designed to fracture easily. The combination of a fragile film
and a tenacious adhesive results in a product which prevents one piece removal from
most surfaces after a short period of dwell time.
Our tamper indicating polyesters look like standard label stocks. However, when these
labels are peeled back or removed, they leave a “void” pattern in the label rendering them
non-transferable. Residue and non-residue depositing adhesives are available.
Both of these tamper indicating label types are available in constructions which work
with a wide variety of variable information print technologies including dot matrix
impact and thermal transfer printing.

Some typical applications are:

• Non-transferable labels for registrations and licenses typically delivered on
business forms.
• Non-transferable warning and warranty labels for automotive, appliance and
electronic industries.
• Tamper-indicating labels and seals for over-the-counter drugs and other
packaging applications.
