Marjane's
Life
Childhood
- Born in Rasht, Iran, 22 November 1969
- Her parents supported Marxist causes against the Shah
- Many people close to her were persecuted
- Uncle Anoosh → hero
- He was a political prisoner, exiled in the Soviet Union
- When he was back in Iran, he was sentenced to
death
- He was allowed one visitor for the night before and
he requested Marjane
- She was very rebellious → bought banned music,
disobeyed modesty rules
- Her parents were scared for her safety so they sent her to
Austria with a family friend
Iran→Austria→Iran→France
- Family friend sent her to a convent
- Left the convent, assimilated punk lifestyle, started using drugs
- Lived in temporary places
- Once she ended up homeless for two months during winter
- Moved back to Iran after turning 18
- When she turned 18 she moved back to Iran
- Started attending college
- Did not like living under Muslim rule
- Felt out of place → seen as foreign both in Iran and Austria
- After finishing college → moved to France

Writing Style
- She was inspired to write Persepolis after
reading Maus
- Simple style of writing and art → accessible
- Defiant and critical of government, political
- Written in french→ new perspective of Iran into
Western culture
- Reflects writing very concisely
- Very direct and straightforward → innocent,
childlike
- Art style is influenced by German Expressionism
- Mix of text types → memoir-graphic novel
