EXPERIMENT NO. 8
FLAME TEST
Objectives:
1. To identify the metals from the color that will send out in a flame
2. To relate these colors to energies of electrons
3. To give practical importance of flame test

Materials:
Pinch of KCl, NaCl, BaCl2, CaCl2, CuCl2, SrCl2 , SnCl4 salts
Vials
Diluted hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Medicine dropper
Nichrome wire inserted into a cork for insulation
Bunsen burner

Procedures:
1. Arrange the vials containing the salts in a row on top of the table.
2. Add two or three drops of diluted HCl into each sample.
3. Make a small loop into the other end of the nichrome wire.
4. Dip the loop of the nichrome wire into one of the samples. (The loop must contain
certain amount of the sample.)
5. Thrust this sample into the blue flame of the Bunsen burner.
6. Observe the color of the flame that will be emitted by the metal chloride.
7. Do the same with all other samples.
8. Make sure that after each sample tested, the nichrome wire is cleared using the
diluted HCl.
9. Record your observations below.

Compound Metal Ion Present Color of the Flame

Emitted
KCl Potassium Violet
NaCl Sodium Yellow
BaCl2 Barium Yellow Green
CaCl2 Calcium Red
CuCl2 Copper Blue/Green
SrCl2 Strontium Red-Orange
SnCl4 Tin Colorless

Questions:
1. What is the use of flame test?

Flame test help to identify the presence of chemical elements in a

sample using the element's emission spectrum.

2. Why is the flame test not very accurate?

Most ions can't be detected in the test at low quantities. The

signal's brightness fluctuates and also some metal almost have
the same color to one another.

3. What is spectroscope?

Spectroscopy is defined as the branch of Science that deals with

the absorption, emission, and scattering of electromagnetic
radiation that is being given off by atoms and molecules which
can be found in different states such as gas, liquid, or solid.
4. What else does a line spectrum tell us?

The line spectral has characteristics of the element emitted the

radiation it consist of sharp lines. The wavelengths of the lines
are characteristic of the element and may form extremely
complex patterns. Also this can tell us about any magnetic field
of the star. The width of the line can tell us how fast the material
is moving and how many energy levels an atom has and how far
away they are from each other.

5. How does an element give off light of a particular color?

When an element's atomic level reaches its ground state, it

undergoes a process called emission whereby it emits variously
colored protons. Anytime an atom is heated or intensely
stimulated, light is produced. The energy disparity between the
two levels will determine the color of the light it emits. Every
element has a different quantity of electrons and a different type
of energy, thus each one produces a different palette of colors. It
can be compared to how unique fingerprints are to each
individual.

6. What is/are the practical applications of flame test?

Flame test can be use in any field: Geologists use the flame test
to identify the presence of metals. Forensic Scientists use the
flame test at crime scenes for quick analysis of element present.
Miners use the test for analysis of sample. It also provides a good
teaching tool for chemistry students learning about emission
spectra.
CONCLUSION:

After completing the experiment, our group has observed and is easily
able to distinguish the various types of flames. We can say that the
colors seen in the flames are proof of emission because we can see that
many different types of elements can be utilized to create them. We
were also able to learn about electromagnetic radiation and how their
wavelengths differ with regards to their color. Moreover, our group was
able to acknowledge the importance of Flame Spectra and its uses in
different fields of science.
