SLIP/PPP
Introduction
We all know that direct connection is the fastest way to connect to the internet. But it is rather expensive for a
common user.
So the user opts for dial-up connection. This is where SLIP/PPP role begins.
LIP/PPP provides the ability to transport TCP/IP traffic between two computer between two computers
Both of these computers has to have some sort of TCP/IP based network.
The SLIP/PPP enables a user to use GUI based software or client on their PC.
It provides easy connection to a user PC with just some simple modem or telephone line.
It is very cheap and affordable.
SLIP/PPP provides direct connection to internet when:
The user PC has a communication link to internet via a internet service provider(ISP).
The user PC must have networking software that can communicate with TCP/IP with other computer on
internet.
The user PC must have a identity address(IP address), so other computers can connect to it on internet.
SLIP
It uses Link Control Protocol (LCP) for link establishment, configuration and testing.
Once LCP is set up, one or many Network Control Protocols (NCPs) can be used to transport traffic over
particular data type.
The IP Control Protocol (IPCP) permits transport of IP packets over a PPP link.
